For the rest of us outside Central California Hot climate! The results of my Fig growing trial are: I grew many cultivars and most of them can't ripe only one crop here(New Jersey),a Breba crop,(like Desert King),or a main crop, like Malta Black. Finally this year 2 of the older cultivars I grow without Winter protection(10F last Winter),decided to show me they can ripe 2 crop: They are: Atreano:68 breba fruit,at present time(and it keeps breba, that I know) Tacoma Violet:60 Breba ,at present time(Keeps breba,I know it). These 2 are early ripening cultivars that ripe breba and ,without any time interval ,ripe the main crop,in a continue succession. OF course pinching needs to be applied in this instance to ripe main crop, but I am sure is possible because the cultivars are early ripening. Here are the Pixes of these 2 trees now(they are about 6 years old) First and second Pix(Atreano),Third and forth pix,Tacoma Violet

Congrats, H2. I'd like to know your pruning strategy. Might you prune the tallest branches once the breba have ripened and rely on the other shorter branches for main crop?

No I am not pruning these 2,because my wife wants them tall trees to provide shade. They are one next to the other,so they will become one single large tall bush, eventually, producing two kind of fruits ,one violet and one white. Tacoma Violet is very good in bad Summers like 2011 and 2012,and delicious,in a long hot dry Summer like 2010,was. And that goes for Atreano too.

Okay, I saw some branches had been pruned low so I thought others would later be pruned. Just stay off of ladders and let the birds have the fruits up in the air. I had a bad fall from a ladder and try to keep my trees fairly short unless I can pick them with a device on a pole.

Well Harvey ,the low pruned ones died from frost,it seem some trees are like that, they sacrifice a couple of branches in order to save the rest,of the wood by canalizing antifreeze, energy to the branches it wants to keep. That is why,in cold climates,we need to prune in the Spring only, when we can see what is alive and what is dead. There is a paradox here,I mean the Breba fruits resisted the 10F temp, and the thick old Branches died. More likelly the tree intentionally let them die.

Hi H2, congratulations on your breba crops this year. I ate one breba off my Atreano here in 2011,and was pretty good. It doesn't seem to hold it's brebas for me here very well. The main crop is a huge over abundance of figs, though. My tree is about 6 years old now The Atreano that ripen late in the cool weather of Fall are to die for, otherwise they are mild, but good. Probably too much heat here and they ripen too fast and don't develop their sweetest flavor like in the Fall. I just got a couple small Tacoma Violet started this year. How rain tolerant is the Tacoma Violet?

Tacoma Violet resist rain very well,in fact last year when many cultivars did sour badly,Tacoma Violett was ,one of the few that I could harvest some good fruits, but not all of them. I think in your climate will be better because it ripe faster, due to heat, plus it loves heat,it doesn't loose Flavor like Atreano does in high heat. Atreano I agree ,does not like extreme heat, and will make mediocre fruits during high heat, but it changes in better the sooner the heat ends.

Herman, Would you say that Tacoma Violet is as cold hardy as Marseille Black Vs?

I can't say that because ,Tacoma I have for 5 years, and these past 5 Yrs were all 8F or higher,While Marseilles Black Vs resisted to -4 F. However Tacoma is a much better Breba producer, that is what I am sure of. And just as good main crop producer.
