Hey everyone,

When does an LSU Purple fig start to change color? Back in early-mid May, I bought my first fig tree, an LSU Purple. It had two brebas on it that I have been excitedly waiting for, and it seems the time is coming soon. One of them has been swelling over the past week and is starting to droop. However, it is still as green as the day I bought the plant, maybe a little yellow if anything. So tell me true... is this probably an LSU Gold?

Must've been a mislabeled tree, unfortunately that happens quite a bit especially with the big box stores.

Looks very close to my LSU Gold.  Wait until it starts getting soft and you should see some honeydew on the eye.  When you pick it, is should have pinkish flesh.  I had my first two today and they were huge.  More than twice the size of celeste.

It looks like something else really wanted a first taste of this fig last night.  I covered it in an organza bag and figure I'll leave it on for a day or so more, in the carport in case it rains. It is soft, but if I can I'd like to wait until it all but drops in my hand.

I am excited! I'll admit, I did stick a finger in there to try it, and it was already very sweet and tasty...

We can say safely now that it is not an LSU Gold either, much to pink on the inside.  Nice looking fig though!

PS i just buy the little 5 dollar bird nets and walmart and if your tree is too large to fit, it really keeps the birds at bay.

Tamar,
Could you please post pictures of the leaves, someone may be able to ID the variety. Thanks.

I will probably get impatient and pick it later today, so I will take pictures then. Along with the leaves, they should include the (mostly) whole fig next to a quarter, the eye, and cut in half... anything else?

My impatience won, and all I can say is wow! My one other fig on this tree is starting to swell, and you can bet that it is bagged away from the local moochers. To me, the flavor was that of a perfect peach martini. I probably could have left it on for other day, at the top of the thick white part (sorry, I am unfamiliar with the terminology) left something to be desired. I was just afraid that since it had been opened, it might go bad before I picked it.
I'm also attaching a picture of the tree itself, if that can help in identifying it at all. Thanks everyone!

It may end up not being an LSU Purple, but at least the other tree I got identifying itself as such will be a purple fig...

So... any chance someone has thoughts on what these might be? I bought them from a local organic nursery and have contacted both them and their supplier, I'll be interested to see if they get back to me with anything.
