COURO DURO, which translates 'hard skinned' is a Common fig much forgotten and difficult to find these days.

Extremely sweet and with berry flavors, is consumed fresh as well as dried in the rural communities.

On certain regions of the South it is also known as 'figo rei' but nothing to do with the fruit with  this same name popping out in the forum occasionally.

wish list:  nothing. i can't grow cuttings  . right now, i have  6 trees showing no signs of fmv. i'd like to keep it that way' 

i was told that if i couldn't deal with fmv, i should grow peaches, so i got a peach tree to live with my clean figs.

Thank you very much for looking at these pictures of the 'Couro Duro' variety.
I forgot to say that it is a Common type fig so it can be grown anywhere with or without wasps.

Pattee,

As a lover of all attractive, dense and Redish/Carmin/Rubi fig pulps, this one is one of my preferred figs,
I would like to see, one day, some of you try a stick or two of this Couro Duro.

No, no,... No toying at all, just showing a distant,  far away fruit being consistently forgotten and shall I say, almost ostracized by the people who had the duty to keep it alive and growing everywhere.
If you think I am toying you are absolutely wrong.

    The problem with text is that it loses tone and other cues in communication. I was being light-hearted. My comment was meant as a back-handed compliment.  Your photos and descriptions are gorgeous and a good source of figs to which we would otherwise never be introduced. Thank you for sharing.

Couro Duro/Figo Rei is yet ANOTHER photo of an excellent looking Portuguese fig. Thanks for posting your photos. Time for a fig hunt (or ninja exercise) first Malta then Portugal.

Couro Duro looks like it should be a favorite Francisco . I can't believe as you say it is much forgotten , difficult to find and yet excellent  .  An heirloom variety ? I'm so glad you are educating us to all  these magnificent varieties.

Shame these wonderful varieties are not available to growers around the world.

So far, I have not been lucky to id the fig I found. There are quite a few look alike figs that makes it difficult to tell the variety.

As I said in that post Greenfig it sure looks like a winner .  It will be interesting to see what Francisco thinks . I certainly would love to be on a cuttings list !

I will try to get some cuttings in the fall. I, actually, talked to the owner. The woman owns the apartment with a small yard where the fig grows. But... the tree was there when she moved in so the trail stops there. It is up to us now to either ID the fig or to name it, adding to the other 3000 named varieties :(

Couro-duro seems like a fig that resists bird spoilage.  Would you consider that true, Francisco?

Rooting:  Smith, CDDB--this pretty much means I have my fun tries (tho' important since they are truly desirable), and only interested for this year: Gulbun, BM, 187-25, or something wildly exotic or precious that nobody has any good reason to send me.

Look at my newly established wish list. Might as well go for the unattainable. A beautiful looking fig. Sure would like to taste it. Would look great next to Strawberry Verte.

this has nothing to do with the forum neither with any of you. it's a domestic issue.

Yes, it is a heirloom variety. I would say that this fig sides very well with Violeta and Sofeno Preto. They are unique!

Greenfig,

Couro Duro inherited its name from the hard skin which resists the point of a knife, specially when it goes slightly over ripe. If the fig you found shares this particular property, you get closer...but then you have to look to the other parts.. pulp, leaves, eye, etc..not easy
But your fig is very nice and promising

I agree it could resist bird spoilage but not for long.. Their becks are sharp !

Thank you for answering my questions. My fig's skin is not as tough as yours so I think it is not the Couro Duro although the shape is similar. 
Well.. I will keep looking for its proper name..
