Looks great Rich, mine are not close yet. I figure at least a week or two. Last year with all the rain we had I lost no fig to the rain, splitting, souring or bugs. My only other tree to give me figs through the rain season was Alma. I love the taste of O'Rourke, a little like Celeste but a different taste which I really like. Also my ripened fruit until the first frost. Does yours do that? "gene"

Looks great Richard! makes a bit jealous, I will confess. I lost my o'rourke to a bitter winter a year ago (it would have fruited this year), and I still wonder how much I would be enjoying having this particular variety. AHHHHH :( Lucky you down there in the south!!!

Very nice! This fig looks delicious! One foot growth in one day is amazing! I wish I had something to trade but I just started with figs and my tiny trees are only 6-7 inches. But if you are willing to send me some cuttings, I would be happy to pay you a fair price.

Strangely I've heard mixed reviews of the O'Rourke. Some folks say it is a very very good variety, while others say it is relatively inferior when compared to lots of other popular varieties. Some people say the Improved Celstes are excellent, and the O'Rourke drops fruit, produces marginal fruit, and is not cold hardy. I think it is a beautiful looking and I am intrigued by some of the positive reviews out there. Anyone have some information to share to clear things up? I am seriously considering chopping down this big maple in the front yard and putting one of these in the ground.

Mario. I dont know if its, cold hardy. It does not drop fruit. Breba crop is different tasting then main crop bith are above average tasting. I have had people say thir orourke does not look like mine. This being said mine came from the lsu fig research center field. Others may not have, the correct variety. I dont think dr O'Rourke would name a not so good fig after himself. Lol. It really is good. But i do not know if it is cold hardy.

My second year O'Rourke dropped the whole first half of it's crop, growing in a SIP like my other figs. Some of the rest were decent, nothing to write home about compared with most of my other figs of same age, same culture methods. Hopefully as it matures it will improve. I am thinking it might be a good fig to dry or make preserves out of. I really preferred the flavor of the Mt Etna types and various other jucier dark or honey figs. But I am new at this, need more experience and older fig trees. And more figs to sample. And more varieties to compare.

Eboone. Did your fruit look like mine ? If so you may try leaving them on tree till they really ripen if not they are bland. This variety hangs on along time while ripening

Richie - I think it is probably just an immature tree. Mine looked about as dark as those in the latest pics, never as juicy. Some just fell off as I checked their ripeness by touching them - I tried to leave them on as long as possible. I only got about 8-9 to taste, the earlier ones dropped off hard and very unripe. Some vestige of the Celeste heritage, no doubt :)

Your tree should better next season. They like to be watered all the way up till they start swelling. I water mine 4 x aweek.
