My father-in-law has many types of fruits near Akron but does not have figs.

I want to get him a fig of course, but I know little about the growing conditions there.
Also he would not be able to do fig shuffle more than the first year, small plant.

I know there are many here that have vastly more experience up there.
What variety would grow, produce well for him in ground?

Thank you for your help.

Salem Dark, Hardy Chicago, Marseilles Black VS are good ones.  Although they will probably die back every year, he should be able to taste them each year after the first two years of good root development.  If he gives some winter protection each year, it will increase his production.

I second the MBVS, very vigorous grower and producer for me. one of the more cold hardy.
Like Frank said, if he can cover, it will help.
