Another excellent video. Your videos are an excellent resource for growers to get solid information and visual testimony on potential varieties to grow. I can't wait for the next one! Thanks.

Joe, Have you tried keeping your trees smaller and putting nets over them? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Bird-X-14-ft-x-45-ft-Dalen-Products-Netting-and-3-4-in-Polypropylene-Mesh-BN-4/202871743

Hi Ricky. Yeah I'm sure those two trees are Desert King. Climate and soil are very different down here than in the PNW. It has been over 100 the last few days. DK seems to ripen up more yellow down here with less red in the interior. It is a very good tasting fig here too.

Hi Ross. When I started out and the trees were small I used bird netting and it was quite effective. However as the trees got bigger I bought larger nets and they stopped working. Turns out the smaller sized netting had 1/4" holes and the larger sized nets had 1/2" sized holes. We have a very small species of bird around here called Verdin that are able to squeeze through the 1/2" holes and they love to eat figs. I have not been able to locate larger sized bird netting with 1/4" holes. I also find the larger sized nets to be very cumbersome and they weigh down the trees and can damage the new growth. I've been happy with the organza bags. They're not perfect, and I still lose some figs to the birds, but overall I get to eat most of the figs that I bag.

I love watching your videos Joe. I can't wait until I have fruiting trees like yours in ground. Are your trees planted straight in our native soil or did you amend? and how often do you water them?

Thanks raimeiken! I usually amend the soil with compost before planting. This year i have been watering every second day and the trees seem very happy. First year trees usually get supplemental water from the hose on off days. When they're starting out the trees really need generous watering to get established in the desert.

Joe, thanks for the video. Your trees are looking great! They've really grown since I saw them. My little Desert King will produce its first very small crop this year. Looking forward to tasting it!

Hi Ken! Thanks! The Georgia White Hybrid tree is loaded with figs this year. Good luck with you DK breba crop! I'm curious what color the DK figs will be when they ripen on your tree. The color of my figs seems to be different than on DK figs grown in the Pacific Northwest.

The oldest ones were planted in 2011 but many are younger than that.
