the book has more of historical value than anything else, but the art is beautiful to look at. i'm not sure if they truly represent the figs that he has painted. i think it was published in 1830's. some of the names are little different, not knowing too much about italian language than few semesters at college, not sure if the spelling has changed over time or if they are different figs. but at least from this book, we know that number of figs were identified back in 1800 and we are still growing them. i think it's worth awhile to preserve the known varieties as they are. __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition. I just seen inside there image of Brogiotto Nero,and yes it has Three lobes leaves just like Barnisotte Black in US collection. The cultivar is known under both names,and ,others like Burjasotte noir,Nero ,etc. All the specimens i had from other sources ,than UC Davis,under those names ,had five lobes,and so my opinion is that Brogiotto Nero is a unique cultivar and ,i am still looking for it,as the UC Davis plant i had,died ,because it can't take Winter here due to Fig mosaic virus and sever cold climates. The UCD Plant made a few wonderful ripe fruits here ,before being killed,by harsh climate,so yes it will ripe in NJ.in ground. here is a pix,and you can see it has three Lobes,just like in the book.

herman, i have two Barnisotte from USDA/UCD growing down here. it's going into second yr. number of figs that are not doing well in NJ is doing ok down here in NC. will see what they will look like when the spring comes. i did notice heavy FMV last yr while rooting. __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition.
