I'm still unsure if any of mine survived the winter. I put an LSU Tiger in the ground, so I'm assuming at least it will come back, even if it has some die back. And I'm hoping the 20gal pots are okay. Not too sure about 5gal and lower. I'm excited for this year, mainly because I have a better potting mix as well as several SIPs to try out. Also going to try earthworm castings. Last year was disappointing so I need to step it up this year. __________________ Frank zone 7a - VA

Moved another 33 into 1 gallon pots over the weekend and outside they went. March 1 they go in the ground......that is if I get busy and get the bamboo removed where they are going:) Too many projects too little time.

Here, most of my trees will go 4 years old, so that means full production ... Future looks sunny as well :) .. I can't wait to taste my BT - I know, I made it on purpose :) - ok, I have some other 6 strains that I never or too scarcely tasted - and hopefully, this year will be the year for tasting the whole of them ! I don't think that the fig trees want to really drive me crazy - I have a saw and a shovel ! __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here

I feel very left out. No snow here. Can't whine. Can't complain. Sigh! It is spring here, and everything is leafing out and blooming. Well, we are having a drought, so luckily figs are mostly drought tolerant once established. Mine are all on drippers, and so far the Governor has not put a hold on water. eboone, if the governor puts a restriction, he will usually tell us to cut our usage by a certain %. If it's half, we cut the drippers to water 50% less. You just adjust. We also capture as much gray water as we can, and use that. We put buckets in the shower to capture the cold water while we wait for the hot to kick in. The entire midwest was in a horrible drought for years, and many farmers did not survive. It's all cyclycle. I do know that we purchased this house on a short sale, and the first thing people do when they are in trouble is stop watering. Every plant here survived after 2 years of zero water. Roses and Citrus and pines survived. Sort of amazing, but they dig their roots down to under the damp rocks or something. Not sure. One citrus struggled. We have no clue what it is because it had no fruit last year. This year with water and fertilizer, it is covered in blossoms. It will be fun to find out what it is. Drought is not fun, and all California and the West is affected. I would love to see snow in the High Sierras! There was some, but not enough. Thanks for asking eboone! Pete, really started getting the fever today. All 150 pots in the garage were smiling because it got to 71 degrees. It want be long until the fig shuffle starts. First of April will be here before you know it. Its almost time to start my 100 or so cuttings in Root Riot Cubes. Yes, I can't wait until the season starts myself !!!

We have already been requested to cut back water usage by 20% - obviously we are in a drought, and the sooner everyone starts (whether there is an official decree or not) the better for everyone. In previous droughts, each water district determines the rules. Ours is in pretty good shape, but still they'll probably ration. We'll just use more of ours outdoors, and cut down on indoor water usage. We are already using the gray water buckets. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for the topic of the thread: can't wait till the season starts. Me too! I can hardly wait. There are a good number of really nice figs I started last year that will be moved up into 15 gallon containers, and given very good care. Many have not produced figs yet, and others produced a few to give us a slight taste of what is to come. Almost all are already breaking dormancy, and a couple already have new little figs on the new growth. Unknown Pastiliere is one that seems to be producing figs right out of the blocks. And then there is Vernino, known to ripen 'late', which has green figs right now that hopefully will ripen in March? Bisirri dark is another that still has a significant number of figs and leaves on it from last year. One Unknown Negretta never even lost its leaves and has a couple fruits too. mike, you are still going strong with ton of cuttings :) i've cut back. only about 35 cuttings going. i think there are few more coming in with one very special package. gina, i remember number of yrs ago when we had water restriction here. that yr, it killed all my grass. i sort of like bare ground, but my wife and neighbors don't care too much about it. Pastiliere is the first one to put on the leaf this yr. not the Unk one, but the one from baud. Vernino is on order from USDA/UCD.. but not sure if i'm getting it.. BM, CdDs, JHA, RdB, LdA and others are going into 3rd yr, so i'm rather looking forward to them. St. Rita, Niagara Black, HdA, and others are going to give first real fig this yr, in their 2nd yr. i'm going to pump fertilizer to Salce, Socorro Black and some others. i should be able to see some figs on Barnissotte and Ischia Black this yr. both from USDA/UCD.. and list goes on. i think just waiting to see what each fig looks like and taste like is one of the biggest part in growing figs. it's like christmas in middle of summer :) __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition.
