I have two wonderful fig trees (varieties unknown) that ripen very late in the season starting mid September. They look healthy and get plenty of sun and heat. Can anyone recommend a variety that will produce a main crop of figs earlier for zone 7a (Westchester co., NY)? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. In Texas, where we have lots of heat, my earliest ripening and most productive in pot is the Celeste. There is more than one Celeste strain, so getting the right one is key. Not sure what you have, but if your trees are fairly young, give them time, as they get older they usually have an easier time to ripen their fruit while improving the flavor. __________________ Sas from North Austin TX Zone 8B Wish list: Becane

Pros around the forum recommend Ronde de Bordeaux for early main crop and overall 'must have'. Depending on location, it can ripen as early as beginning of August and since it's a main crop, it doesn't matter if it freezes back to ground level. First to ripen main crop for me in southern British Columbia is LSU Improved Celeste. Followed quickly by FLorea and RdB.

Pverdes3, I see that you have Della Signora. Have you had fruit yet? I have a young Della Signora plant but can't find much information beyond the seller's description. __________________ NE Scotland Young plants: Nero del Portogallo, Babits, Della Signora, Ice (Crystal?), Brown Italian, Sultane, Fingered Giant, Flat (Pogacsa) In propagation: Brown Turkey, Sphikas Unk., Ladywood Unk. Don't know how early it is compared to others as it is my only tree, but I picked my first main crop Hardy Chicago fig Aug 17th this year. But last summer which had much less heat, my first fig was Sept 2nd. Last year I ended up harvesting 76 figs from that 2 year old tree. So far this season I have got 142 figs from this tree and hope to get a dozen or 2 more. Very happy with it. __________________ Steve Zone 5b-6a Oshawa Ontario That's Canada eh!
