Pete,

Congrats! I consider this one the Grand Daddy of all figs.
Hope it does you well.

I agree with Martin,
Once the sucker get another couple inches or more get a coffee cup and poke a hole large enough to where you can stick the sucker right through and fill with potting mix. After a couple months then just clip it off and re-pot it into a larger pot.

Personally, I had trouble trying to root cuttings off this one. Just so you know.

It was on EBay last Summer. A well known seller had it up for auction.
Surprisingly it didn't bring that much.

I have a feeling this won't be the case the next time around.

I tasted one last season at Adriano's to me it had a grapelike flavour like when you eat a wine grape or dark grape that flavour you get from the skin that's what was the first thing that came to mind not too sweet dont believe it was fully ripe either it Was ok I would need to eat a few more to make a judgement on this fig.

my VdB tastes like raspberry.. Paradiso tastes like melon.. and GN might taste like grape.

 

i want to know if there a fig that taste like black cherry.

Isn't it funny how a fig can taste like so many other things lol.

For a black Cherry tasting fig look up Eve's Black Cherry fig on the forum should have pics.

Beautiful fig Pete. I can't wait it looks like my GENOVESE is gonna fruit for me this season.I will share photos of It's fruit when they do.I hear this is the one of the best tasting figs we'll see.Have a great Memorial Day everybody.

Pete,

An alternative to layering the sucker would be to wait until the tree goes dormant, bare-root then clip the sucker at the base.  It will form roots as this season goes on.  Once clipped and potted on its own, it will continue to establish roots over the off season and be ready to grow next spring.

that's another option.. what's the difference between sucker and branch below soil? i can't tell the difference.

 

i guess depends on how they grow this year i'll do one or the other. that tiny sucker is growing fast, putting out leaves and so on.

Nick that sucker with a sharp knife right at the base where it meets with the mother tree or even cut into it a 3rd of the way or so, mound soil up around it at the base and watch it closely. You should have a new start this summer. I did that successfully last summer.

more than likey, i'll dig it out as sucker early next spring.. the branch is too thin to chance nicking it.. hopefully i'll have some cuttings by fall of 2013. i keep cutting my trees and they are more and more looking like european dental work.

Here's my GENOVESE look forward to a few figs from this plant this season wish me figs.Next to my GENOVESE on the bottom left is a backup it is great to have a backup just in case.

Has anyone actually tasted this fig ?. I was at Adrianos last year and tried this fig . I was not impressed in the least . It was large but ok at best . However at the same time I tried a Desert King that was perfectly ripe and it blew me away because I guess I was expecting it to be just ok .
It could be the GN was under ripe but just like Nelson said in an earlier post , it was ok .
Just my opinion .

Hey John, I think both of us had high expectation's to begin with and unfortunately we both had the same experience. I honestly dont think they were fully ripe but it was just ok not sweet or figgy flavour was more like eating a concord grape even though I wasn't impressed im not ready to give up on this one just yet.  

I think Genovese Nero might possibly need allot of heat like Black Madeira does to ripen properly. Im sure with time as more people now have this variety we will be able to see how good it really is in different climates.

LOL We are all salivating for a taste of Genovese Nero and it could wind up to be a dud, that would be very sad. I'm busting for the opportunity to find out first hand. Could be a couple reasons the taste was not superior, maturity of the tree, ripeness, to name a couple. Rafed, thanks for putting me on the list. I will wait and watch as others post pics of their trees and fruit. I do have a lot of good figs to keep me busy this year.

Has to do with ripeness and maturity amongs other factors.

Adriano can't be wrong on it for having it for 20 plus years.

Rafed, dont give up just yet simply shared my experience one fig is not enough to really judge Genovese Nero. I think the fact that I was expecting it to be something sent from the heaven's might of clouded my judgment when I didnt get that lol in no time we will sample some Genovese from our own plants and then make a judgement.

But there is always that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what if?

I just wonder how her lighter color sister is.
You know, the light colors Martin like?

It's nice to have both to compare.

Hey Rafed, The Genovese Bianco should be a very good fig from what I hear. Your a lucky guy to have both there's not many people out there that have both or either one for that matter.

I say put your genovese Nero on the sunniest spot and let it do its thing. I too dont believe Adriano could be wrong on the taste of this fig specially since hes been growing it for so long must of been weather related it is definately a pretty fig. Dont forget most of the pictures seen of this fig is actually of the Breba's.

Hey all ,

I also have the greatest respect for Adriano's taste in figs . It may very well be it was a day or so early and that can make all the difference in the world . He knew I was coming and saved one for me specifically , so I don't want to sound ungrateful . I am just giving my honest opinion and was wondering if anyone else had actually tried it and had a different experience .
So don't anybody be rash and head for the nearest bridge ... Lol

last yr, the figs came out rather strange. i think it was mostly due to the weather. i'm waiting to see how it will do this yr. the leaves and fig shape is very similar to the others, but the color of the pulp and color of the fig wasn't exact.

no breba on my GN. only breba i'm getting this season are one from Paradiso something.. and LdA. all other breba dried up and dropped. some, local birds helped with knocking them off the tree. the fact they came off so easy with bird peck seems to indicated they wouldn't have hung in there anyway. 

so, total of 2 breba.. maybe late may or early june. the main will be in the end of july or early aug in some of the trees. others don't even show fig embryo. 

i'm rather surprised that VdB breba didn't stick around. they are usually reliable.

Mine is growing very well.  I winterize it indoors last year.  I am expecting great things from this tree.  If this fig turns out like my 2 grand daddy Pastilieres, then WOW!  I know some folks are sketical about the Pastilieres from Raintree.  I just laugh laugh laugh!  But I tell you what!  Pastiliere from Raintree is worth its weight in gold!  It's the juciest fig I've ever eaten and its only gonna get better with time!  I also have a Pastiliere from Baud but it's a youngster.  I also have 2 Rouge de Bordeauxs that are pretty large but not at the grand daddy stage yet.

So,  GN might be one of those figs that takes time to fully develop into being a superior fig.  Hmmmmm its going to be a great year for figs!

Pete, come July....post pics of how much it has grown for me please.

Dennis, glad to hear your endorsement for Pastiliere from Raintree, as I got one 2 weeks ago. I up-potted it to a 2 gallon, the can it came in was fully rooted. I have high hopes for it. My GN is growing well now that warm weather is here, but it is young. I think I'll have to visit Harvey if I want to taste one this year.
