This will be an interesting one, I got Noire de Barbatane just in case of excessive moisture as sometimes when ripening happens here it can be humid or thunder storms. Barbatane is supposed to be very similar to sollies but more resistant to humidity. Just in case you needed another reason for 1 more tree, it would be interesting to see how they compare. Looks like it's off to a great start.

I also started VdS last year from a kind member. I'm so looking forward to getting some figs this year from it. Must look to see if it's forming any fruits yet. Most other figs here are. (Pete, I can see the KB from you out the window right now. A couple of the young fruits (first ever, 2 year old tree) are over 1 inch in length already.)

Gina, my KB (also from Pete) was doing great last year and I was positive I would have fruit this year. But alas it died to the ground in the cold winter even with some protection. There are a couple shoots about 1 inch high coming up but I'm not expecting fruit this year.

gina, steve, thanks for letting me know :) i have about 4 KB i rooted this winter. i'm trying to see if pinching is really needed. one i'll pinch next yr, one i won't pinch at all, other i'll be giving different fertilizer. the mother tree, at least the one i got from gene, was top and root pruned over the winter and now it's growing branches and leaves. but i don't see any figs yet. they are pushing something, but with KB, i can't tell what it is. i hope some are figs. if not, i'll have to pinch again..

I have not pinched my KB at all. But then it's very warm here, no frost, and figs break their light dormancy early. I have two KBs (maybe a third, if I didn't give it away). One I moved to a 15 gallon this year, and another still in a 3 gal. Both have fruit. The larger, about 2 feet tall, has several branches and has 12 figs thus far. The other has fewer, but is less accessible to count. Both KB and VdS are ones with good reputations that I want to experience, not just eat. :)

I traded for VdS with a generous forum member last fall and they are growing really well.
The only thing that concerns me is that they are a late unifere. When they have fruit I'm considering relocating them to the south facing brick wall to keep them warmer longer later into the season.

most late figs do well here. summer is long and hot in nc. only issue is humidity on occasions. if timing is right, this will be a great yr. we have been at 90s for last few days, and for next week or so in high 80s into 90s again. temp will stay up like this till sept. or oct... if not till nov.
