Ok you guys, it was a delicious fig. It had a distinctive aftertaste, almost vegetal, like celery maybe. Or was that aftertaste the start of souring? I don't know. I do know that this is a really good fig. But, there is an even better one about a block away. Black on the outside, red on the inside, I can't wait to get back there and get the story (and some pix). It was a lot better than this one. It was not as good as Barry's Black Ischia, but it was better than practically everything I have had so far. Vito, yes, the Golden Celeste snapped back, thanks for remembering, I wish I were going to the Staten Island fig thing as it would be nice to see you again. But you are going to Tim's next Sunday, right? BTW there is a canned pulpo in Walmart, from Spain, that is really good and "competitively priced" as they say. Brand name La Fe (I think), also, their sardines are excellent. Pete, I didn't take your advice and knock those figs off the Timslight, they are about ready, and me and Barry will try them. We had one a few weeks ago but it was not ripe. More to come, this is fun!
Hey by the way does anybody have any idea what this may be?

Dan I didn't get to the ones you told me about around town, so far I am within blocks of my house. I went back to the super dooper fig place today with Barry. The owner was there, but the figs were all gone. Anyhow the owner is Albanian, this is a tree he brought with him. He also has a large hardy pomegranate tree, and a quince that he brought from his original home. He says that he will gladly provide cuttings when the time is right (January or February is what he said.) As I think I mentioned, these figs are medium sized, very black on the outside, very red on the inside, and the flavor is outstanding, one of the best of the summer. Looking forward to getting to know George and his garden better.

Harvey, he (George) said he brought it with him from Albania, he did not have any info about the variety etc. Correct me if I'm wrong Barry.

You are correct Donna, he had no clue as to it's name just that it was productive and hardy in our area and he brought it from his old home. Also an early variety as he had removed all of the fruits already. A very healthy looking Pomegranate, can't wait to get some cuttings! Same with the fig, nice looking tree. And if it's as good as Donna says, it must be a winner, as she's tasted some very good ones, from my yard, can't keep her out LOL!

Okay, great. Did he propagate it from cuttings or seed? This is a variety that should be sent to Davis, IMO. I'd like to get a few sticks and will propagate for both me and Davis or you can send them direct. Sure wish we could see some photos of the fruit. Please ask about hardness of the seeds. Great find! Also, nice figs!

We didn't ask him how he propagated, but we can. Yes I think this is a real good find as well Harvey as there aren't many truly hardy Poms around. Sure wish I could have tasted one though. Donna seems to relish the hunt so I wouldn't be surprised if she comes up with a couple more good finds. Most of those I've found wind up being average or very common. There are quite a few I haven't checked on yet though, they are all over the neighborhood.

I got the impression that he grew it from cuttings, but as Barry says, we didn't ask this specifically. It was so large that it dis not even register to me as a pom. Barry saw it. It's like a smallish California type Pom, vs the bushy in ground hardy poms I have seen out here.

Would be interested in cuttings of the Pomegranate as well. Would be glad to purchase. That would be a extremely early Pomegranate and there are not many hardy to that area.

Well here is that tree, now. I have not seen a sign of life from any neighborhood in ground tree -- so far. Could all the on ground trees be dead?

Donna, I take it you were not able to get cuttings from the Abanian fellow's tree before the bitterly cold weather came? Hopefully, it will sprout up from the base.
