I've put up a few posts asking about potting mixes and fertilizer.  But it seems I should make a more formal intro.  I'm Tony V. from western PA.  I've kept figs for years, however, more as a tradition as opposed to a serious hobby.  They were family trees passed down from my wife's great-grandparents. Well, after this winter I lost numerous trees (in fact all but 2).  I buried them and they got some type of freeze and/or rot and that was the end of them.  But this turned out to be a positive in some ways.  This prompted me to get more serious about figs and do research (too much research!).  I was lucky enough to get in touch with kubota1 who lives relatively close to me.  He has been GREAT selling me trees and providing helpful information. It is because of his generosity I'v been able to come out of the gate with a strong selection of trees for a relative newbie.  So far I have:

Violet de Bordeaux
Tacoma Violet
Marseilles Black VS
Petite Negri
Conadria
Chiapetta (AKA: Consenza)
Hardy Chicago
Binella (Dottato)
KRMK Light
Desert King
Southern Brown Turkey (or so I think - that's the trees I've had for years)
Unknown Mt Etna variety

I say I'm done for a while but it is scary how much of an addiction this can be.  I'm sitting here at work thinking if they're growing.  They all have figs on them and I'm sure I'll get to taste them all this year.  That is if my 3 kids - who all LOVE figs - give me a chance.  My youngest - an 8 year old girl - is the worst.  I call her the fignapper.  She's been know to sneak away from the dinner table to steal the few figs we had on our previous trees.  So wish me luck.

My wife will surely have a conniption but I have no doubt more will be added.  I also plan on trying my hand at rooting this winter.  All of my grandparents were born in the same town in Calabria.  So I'm going to be on the lookout for figs native to that Region.  Thanks and if you have any special knowledge on figs from Calabria please send me a message...I'd be very appreciative.  Thanks..Tony V.

You will love Chiapetta, it is a strong grower for me, so is MBVS. What is KRMK light?

Welcome to the forum.
A neighbor was an Italian gardener. He would propagate his trees through root-shoots.
IMO, it is the most efficient way to propagate figtrees.
So look at your trees for root-shoots.
My Dalmatie tree already has 6 daughters most from root-shoots.

I've got to say that Tony is a class act "Fig Nut". The bug has bitten him hard.
It's nice to see a family that loves figs as much as mine. You know you have to bring the family up in about a month to get a real taste. That's how my wife finally gave in to me. Feed her good figs!

I know there are a few other varieties that are calling your name:)

Hi Tony
You have started with a nice collection of figs. 
I too love figs from Calabria but keep in mind their weather is more like S. California not Zone 6a so they would need a greenhouse environment to grow properly in our climatic zone.   Still Calabria figs have a unique taste so if you don't mind the extra work they will be worth it.

Hello and welcome! There are many great figs from Italy, but really they are great from all over the mediterrenean!

Welcome Tony.  Hope you get to try some of your figs this year.  You'll have to plant enough to keep you fig napper happy.  More trees for sure and remember she's still growing.  Good luck sounds like you are off to a great start.

Thanks everyone. After all the figs were repotted and arranged on the patio my wife loves the look. She's already agreed that we need more. What a woman!

And a greenhouse is already underway. The sites been prepped and construction with my kids starts next week. I'll post pics when it's done. Thanks..Tony
