Wayne, Hard to score because of the other figs I am harvesting at the same time. This first one tasted muted and watered down because it was. It was unprotected and the birds did not touch it. That is a telling sign. Let's see what happens with the next several that are threatening to ripe soon. No rain for the next several days.

Thanks JD on all your posts, I have most of them, although less than a year old, so I am taking notes, especially how they hold up to the rain, then I can make plans for the or pots.

Jimmie, it really is about ripeness. If we didn't have the birds and the squirrels and the rain, and the humidity to worry about, this would be the result all of the time.. Rich tasting figs like this Atreano...

Frank, that is one ugly looking fig, it has to taste good! I can not wait to taste my first UGLY Smith.....next year....unless someone has one that is ripe.

Wayne, As your Smith matures, they get 'less ugly' and develop purple veins against its green base. The taste gets better as well. Frustratingly slow but unquestionably worth the wait. Frank, I hear you and understand. I will take my own medicine.

FMD. Thanks for showing me what to look for when my atreano is fully ripe. Pictures always help.

Thanks JD, I learn something new everyday from you experienced growers. Smith is one fig I really wanted more than any other variety and can not wait for my first fruits, but I will. One Smith is growing faster than the other, same growing conditions. Frank has been a real help to me when I first started this hobby, one of these days I am going to make the trip to Tallahassee.
