So I've been cutting figs from my 2 year old trees for several days now.  I am worried the season is not too far away and these probably won't ripen anyway.  This picture includes Black Madeira, Chicago Hardy, Strawberry Verte, Takoma Violet, Malta Black, Salce, Gino's Black, and probably a few others I can't remember.  There will be about as many coming off tomorrow.  Most are still nubs and i do not want to take them off before I see if they are a fig or a branch (just between you and me... I already know)

I have left 1-3 figs on each tree that is producing in hope they will ripen.  Malta Black and Gino's have been setting fruit prolifically.  I've left 3 on Gino's and 6 on Malta Black, but both are still small sized trees.  Some of the trees are just now hitting their growth spurt and starting to set a lot of figs, but at this point nothing that starts now is being left on.  The figs on Black Madeira, Salce, and Sucrette (UCD) look like they are breaking out of the stagnant stage and should ripen soon.

The figs on the trees in Texas are probably just now starting to ripen.  I was planning on heading down soon to taste some fruit and set some air-layers, but a family member's medical situation is going to change that.  Oh well.

Thanks for Posting, The figs look pretty small, why...????  Are you growing in pots  or in ground...???   How's the Heat over there...???  Finally the temps have dropped from 103 to 98 degrees with very low humidity and Dry heat at times.

Great post - the juxtaposition of title and image made me laugh and gave my wife another reason to thing I may be losing it.

They are from the trees I am growing in containers near Denver.  I removed the figs so the trees would not put energy needlessly into them.  I've got small trees and roughly 2 months left of the season.  The risk / reward ratio does not justify leaving them on.  Like I said, I have at least one fig (all are larger) on most of the trees from which I've been snipping these small ones.

I'm doing the same for the trees that aren't dropping them on their own.  Several trees just started growing and putting a fig at each node.  Sigh....

Maybe next year.  :)

Hi James,
I have some trees with popping figs. On my "dalmatie tree2" they showed up last week . I'll leave them on and let mother-nature do the job.
fgilets pump a lot of energy and that in general prevents new growth on the stems .
