MVS Black is the leader in the clubhouse (yet again) for Most Productive. Thanks Vasile. And yet again, the birds and squirrels are enjoying them well before they ripen. Luckily there are more than they can eat over the course of a couple of days. At least one 'survives' the predators. They are mid-season, medium size, berry, sweet, juicy, no crunch, super productive, and good to have (like a workhorse, workhorse = tool or workhorse = running back or starting pitcher). Edit. MVS Black wins Most Productive* (* = for figs not named Celeste).

Have you compared this with hardy Chicago? Is it worth having both?

What a year for MBVS in our area, Jimmie. Just tonight, after eating a bunch off the tree, I brought a dozen or so up to the house and everyone swooned over the taste and quality of this fig. Overall, it's been a great fig season so far.

I agree Frank. The season has been excellent to this point. I am thankful that I am getting what I got.

Near Austin, MBVS is most productive, as well. I think it is about as productive as the Celeste I have in Houston (# of figs per new nodes). Celeste has been in the ground for about 17 years (and is RKN+) while MBVS was planted 4 years ago (but has died back to the ground every winter).

Did not realize that MBVS is not cold hardy? But amazed a fig that has died to the ground every year is productive, good to know. Thanks for the info.

JD, MvsB is also looking really productive here in MD judging by the size of the main crop.  I'm looking forward to tasting this one for the first time in a few weeks.

Von, MvsB is supposed to be very cold hardy according to everything else I have read.  Perhaps James' MvsB has been affected by late freezes that came along after the tree came out of dormancy?  Or maybe it is the dry cold or wind that it doesn't like?  I suspect it wasn't protected.  James, what do you think?

Yeehova, I am growing MvsB and am not growing Hardy Chicago. But I'm also growing Sal'sEL and Takoma Violet.  All of these are Mt. Etna types so I figured that, given limited space, Hardy Chicago wouldn't be different enough to warrant growing.  Then again, I seem to be the only person on the forum not growing HC!
