Ripening problem-what does this mean?

The attached pic shows a cut away of F. preto, which is supposed to be red inside. This year I am seeing a problem, the fig has turned black and fallen off the tree, but the inside is yellowish. I refuse to taste them. The tree has been doing fine all summer, although there is a problem with the feeder tube on the sip, but the leaves look healthy and there is a plentiful crop of over 40 figs __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

Hi rafaelissimo, Probably just a matter of patience. I often have that problem with the 2 or 3 first figs of the year. Some misshaped figs will sort of ripen first - but in fact they are not eatable ... A bit frustrating ... Is that tree in ground or in pot ? If in pot, I would suggest that it could be a problem of stress and would try to up pot in the next spring ... It could be a problem of temps. Do you still have temps above 10°c even at night ? __________________ ------------------------ Climate from -25°C to + 35°C Only cold hardy figtrees can make it here

My Celeste made a few strange figs that ripened way too early. They were misshapen and the inside was weird. I was thinking that it had something to do with the fact that they ripened too quickly. Could that be the case with yours? __________________ Zone 7b (Central Arkansas) Seven trees in the ground: Hardy Chicago, Celeste(?), LSU gold, Italian Black, Southern Brown Turkey(?), Strawberry Verte, and Unk yellow. Trees in pots: VdB, CdD, and Sicilian?

The first one last week began to ooze something, NOT HONEY, unfortunately. This one was full sized when ripe, but again white insode and inedible. The tree is in a 20-gal SIP from Bills Figs. There might be a water problem but the leaves look fine. I would think a hydration issue would present first in the leaves, or shrivelled fruit. The first one was normal sized, the second was smaller (seen in pic). No shrivelling or dropping fruit (yet). Rafael, it almost looks like it's fermenting. My Preto is pretty small (cutting from Encanto March '13) but the few figs it's had don't have the ostiole facing straight up like that. Maybe that's a normal drop of honey that's bubbling because of the fig's position. As for the first fig, could it be that the pot got spun or shifted, and the fruit caught too much light, too quickly, at the wrong time? I hope it's not some disease, and the others ripen normally. Heck of a thing to happen after waiting 100 days. __________________ Rui Southeast CT, zone 6B

Hi Rui Yes fermenting or souring, but not in the normal sense-souring normally follows ripeness, here there was no ripeness to the pulp, only in the skin. __________________ Zone 7b, Queens, New York

It looks like the eye is pointing straight up allowing an abundance moisture to enter, not an expert but looks like fermenting and souring. Maybe?
