Good day for comparing figs.  Although the overall flavors on this plate weren't as intense as I'd like, I still enjoyed them.  Could be the growing conditions and timing of harvest.  I know Excel should've been better.  Below is how I rated them, #1 being the best.

  1. MBVS - intense berry flavor.  Very good. (ground)
  2. Salem Dark - not as intense, but very good. (SIP)
  3. Abebereria - pretty good.  lacking flavor compared to the previous two I had. (SIP)
  4. Unk Carini - this one sat on the ground since it appeared 3 months ago.  Began to spoil and wasn't the red flesh it should've been.  Still surprisingly good with a honey flavor. (ground)
  5. Excel - I thought I let this one ripen fully, but I don't think I did.  Very bland.  (SIP)

All of them looked good to me, you are right on with the flesh color of Carini, strange. Nice collection, congrats.

This is what that same tree produced in the previous years.  I did pick a good one the other day and it was close to the pic below.  The one I posted in the 1st post was the 2nd one I picked this year.  I'll be interested to see what the other look like.

Frank, Was the Abebereria was fully ripe? It looks like the stem did not come off cleanly.

The stem was actually woody.  There are 2 more figs on the tree with the same characteristics.  The 2nd pic shows a better view of where I removed that fig.

That is kind of cool.  It looks like my Abebereria died before I got fruit from it.  Do you feel like the flavor of the figs in SIPs is up to par with those grown in the ground?

I haven't compared SIPs to ground with the same variety, but I am thinking ground trees will have better flavors.

I hate to be repetitive but you can tell if a fig is ripe by looking at the part between the skin and the pulp.  If it's an opaque white, it's not ripe.  If it's translucent and thinning then it's ripe.  So if you remember what these looked like before you picked them then try waiting a little longer.  Raccoons can tear open aluminum screen but at least the ones here wont bother 3 layers of screen taped over with packing tape.  They also wont (or can't) bother 23 G 1/4 in hardware cloth.  :)
