After waiting what seemed like forever, the figs started ripening.  Finally my first home grown fig!

They both had a fig taste, and neither was very sweet.  The VdB had a stronger, more concentrated flavor.  The CH could have ripened more, but was still good.

The VdB was TINY!  I'm not sure if its because the mother plant has a bad case of FMV or if this is normal.  Its a 2 year old tree, with 5 figs on it.  The CH was started from cuttings in January.  Its very vigorous, multiple branched at 4 ft tall now, so I was not concerned with leaving figs on them.  Each CH is ripening another 10 figs or so.  I've included a pic the  3 CH (center and background, foreground is a young RdB).  They're in 6 gallon buckets.

Congratulations! They look about right to me, size always varies but the ripeness of the VdB looks dead on. My VdB's and Petit Negra are just finally starting to show signs of swelling on the first figs.

It feels great to have hard work pay off.  My VdBs are much smaller than usual this year.  I blame the weather.  Just think, they'll taste better each year.

First ripe figs eaten increases the desire to have more figs.

First ripe figs eaten from plant you've grown and nurtured increases the desire to grow more figs!

Congratulations Phil!

Congratulations

VdB is a great tasting and growing fig. Our tree produces smaller fruit but some times we get golf ball sized fruit.

Phil, as the tree ages, you will start noticing the difference. they get better, believe me.

Hi Phil,   I know what you're feeling.  It's so rewarding.  even the ho-hum ones are a thrill.  I think we'll develop a better eye for when  to pick.  Its hard to resist picking too soon.  They both look great!   That VdB is a real treat.

Thanks all.  They all seem to ripening at the same time.  I picked 11 CH today (actually 1 fell off), as they were all hanging straight down and very soft.  Again, a fig flavor, not real sweet, not complex.  But surely a winner!  Glad to hear the VdB can produce some larger figs, and I look forward all my trees maturing!
