Please help identify variety!

Hey fig buddies. I bought these two trees during the spring of 2011, basically to save from certain death, from Home Depot. On a routine visit I spotted two 3.75 gal pots with what looked like 3 1/2 foot tall but an inch thick dead sticks in them. One with one or two leaves on it and the other with a single fig , toppled over all dried up and half exposed roots!!!!!! I called mrs K right away to explain and of course ask for permission to purchase, you all know how these things work and $75 later the rescue mission began! They were labeled as BrownTurkey and this is what I ended up with! By the way we have absolutely no regret for the rescue and love and appreciate what our figgies do for us in return. Description : very cold hardy, survived last years worst in area winter, intact!(inground unprotected) Small to medium fruit , light brown pink to redish center very sweet very good flavor , minimal to no Breda (all but two or three dropped ) big main crop that ripens within two weeks . Huge five lobed leaves. I call them Southern B T but not sure. Could be a strain of Celeste. Thanks in advance for all Your help! I don't know, but looks a bit like Magnolia. Except for that last picture with the immature leaves / growing tip (but who can tell from immature tip growth?). Take a look at Magnolia and its close variants (listed as "synonyms" in the variety pages, and read those descriptions to see if it fits. http://figs4fun.com/Info/Info_Magnolia.html http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html (look at Magnolia and Brunswick, see if other characteristics seem to match). To me it looks like Celeste,but can't say for sure because ,we do not have leaves pixies.

Thank You all for Your help. I was kind of suspecting they are Celest but my only experience with identifying varieties comes from comparing pics and the ones that I grow and have produced fruit. Well it depends how You look at it. The pic of the young fig on my original posting is a Breda , long thick neck ,short to no stem and looks identical to the Breda pics on the figs 4fun variety link about Celeste! The tree was full of those but they all dropped within less than two weeks and of course I freeked out but they both started setting a new crop immediately that ripened last week of July ,first week of August! I would recommend LSU Purple. They grow fast and never ever split with awesome flavor once mature.One prob for You guys up there is the cold so if You plant it You will have to cover it every winter. Mine grew to be a monster in three years great production but last winter killed it. Nothing from it this season. Starting it over I guess! chris k LSU purple sucks why would you recommend it. The only plus is it's slight resistance to RKN. It's not very hardy and not very good tasting. I've heard people say it take about 5-7 years for them to get a good taste but who has that kind of time when there are better fig trees producing quality figs at a young age. __________________ South Carolina zone 7b-8

Yes You re right, not very cold hardy(LSU purple) but with a little patience it is a good choice with ,not too sweet but good flavor! All observations from personal experience on this variety ! __________________ ChrisK Atl GA Zone 7b-8a

My LSU Purple use to taste like crap too until it got some age on it! Give it a couple of year and it will surprise you! It is super hardy and I am working on putting mostly LSU Purple figs in my orchard along with Marseilles Black. __________________ Dennis Charlotte, North Carolina/Zone 8a

True that Dennis. Mrs Ks'and my reaction was exactly the same when we tasted the first ever Purple fig! Looks great but tastes like nothing. Year two was a big surprise just like You said! Last years' extreme cold killed it though and it never recovered enough to produce fruit! Hey there's always next season. Here are some pics! Michael T, The kid came on originally asking for free cuttings and he was told to rejoin and introduce himself and contribute and then folks would be willing to give him stuff. Gotta hand it to him in that he's certainly trying to contribute. I might make a deal with him but he'd have to learn the english language first as his posts are badly written. He originally claimed we should give him free cuttings because he's 13. A 13 year old should certainly be able to write much better then he does. It's amazing that he's actually posting info as if he knows what he's talking about. Geeez we get so much of that -- instant experts. I think in the case of this kid he's decided he's going to post us into submission. chrisK, Is there a difference between Vasalika Sika and Vasalika White? LSU Purple is a great fig once it has some time on it. I sold one this summer that was from '06 and it's figs were great. My replacement 2 year old's figs are not very good, but expecting all varieties to produce great figs in year 2 is asking the impossible. Dennis, If my Marseilles Black VS trees are mediocre again next year (3rd year) I'll have to ask you for cuttings. I have 2 good sized trees but their production was not great and they just seemed inferior to Ronde de Bordeaux in every way. Not really. Vasilika sika means' Royal figs and in my Greek head it could mean black or white so my instinct was to specify the color. Sorry for the mix up. I will change it to vasilika sika. Thanks for letting me know! __________________ ChrisK Atl GA Zone 7b-8a

For mgginva Just wanted to clear things out about my LSU Purple fig. Bought it late spring 2011 from TyTy as a green Isahu or something . 3 1/2 foot 3/4 inch caliper and planted it in ground. Summer 2012 got the first fig and realized it was a different variety.Summer 2013(last year) the tree grew to a 12 foot beast and gave me all those figs You can see on the pics, about 300, almost everbearing habit . Winter 13/14 killed it to the ground, so I assume it was between three and five years old when it produced the good figs!
