Hi Harvey:Thanks for the vigilence you practice ,finding out, what some people are up to.
I found out today how easily i can be cheated.
In 1989,on april 15,it was on a Sunday close to my Birthday,my wife ,and a lady friend of her, decided to ,give me a gift, for my birthday.
So they wanted to buy me a gold chain, paying half and half.
What I needed to do ,was to go with them and choose what i like.
Went there ,at "Pennsauken Gold Mart"choose a Figaro gold chain about 10 grams or more.
I remember well it was $250+
I was wearing it a couple of times, then it went in my wife jewerly box.
This year she promise to buy me a gold pendant with my zodiac, the ram.
So she said, why do not you wear your gold chain, supposelly makes you healthier if you do.
So I said,OK,bring it out.
When she got it out ,it was kind of turnished a little and was suppose to be 18 Kt.
So I said:
Let me check with magnified glass to see if it is marked as 18K Gold.
When i looked it had only one number, 925 SU.
Check on computer and  it was the marking of Silver.
Our problem is that none of us three ,did not check the marking in 1989,because we trusted, the seller.
So it is Gold plated Silver.
It took 26 years to find out,LOL.

Herman - I think the more important thing here is that your memory is incredible. No details are missing, it seems. I imagine your wife lives nothing down :)

Those two work together but are not connected to the other sellers discussed in this thread.  I had a separate thread that discussed them.

Oh, Oh...I think I may have been an unwitting participant in this fig conspiracy.

When I offered cuttings at a reasonable cost recently, I had one particular order for over 100 pieces. It came from an individual with a Russian sounding name and a Brooklyn address.

But if the end game is to sell them on eBay as rare cultivars, why not simply raid a local fig tree and label the cuttings accordingly?

Probably couldn't recognize a fig tree "in the wild".

Thanks to everyone (especially HarveyC ) for all the excellent detective work and warnings.

Great detective work guys.  You should all work for CSI.  Although I buy quite a bit of stuff off ebay and am usually very satisfied I have always be nervous about ebay cuttings.  After reading this I am certainly going to stay away which is a shame since ebay is a great resource.  Most of my cuttings were either acquired locally or from generous members plus one year i ordered from UCD.  I guess that isn't going to change for a while.

Bill, there are plenty of good sellers on eBay.  Here is a list from a while back which can be of some help even though I'm not listed on it! http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5436565

Thanks Harvey for the info.  There are definitely sellers in that post that I recognize from window shopping on ebay.  I think maintaining a list that connects ebay sellers with their F4F member ID is a good thing (Obviously with their consent).  Many ebay sellers do provide their forum ID but not all.

I second Harvey post about good ebay sellers.  Many legit people do sell.  For them it does make sense since it is easy to keep track of sales and get address labels printed ect.
I used to check this forum long before I became a member back when figs were a passing fancy rather than an obsession.
I looked for lots of good posts, passion and information from the sellers.
I know I'm not the only one either since the stuff from the good sellers cost more than the new sellers.
Isn't the time, energy and cost of growing your fig to a 1-2 year plant worth more than the $20-30 saved?
I mean what a heart break to pamper a Celeste or Brown Turkey for 2 years thinking you had something rare and different.

Knock on wood I don't think I've been burned yet.

There are 71 guests on as I right this.  I think that more than one are looking at  varieties and seeing how not to get burned on ebay.  As to the number of posts on this topic I think almost every member has looked at the ebay offerings and has though about buying.  Other topics may be informative but only interesting to the members if they are ready to try something or are having that issue.  Just my thought on why this had so many views and replies.

Boy, am glad I read this thread form start to finish.  What a mindblower.

For the last week or so, I have been drooling over ebay listings for some very desirable fig cuttings from people that I have never heard of.  There were a couple of sellers that I contacted and identified as bona fide, participating F4F members.  ALL of the others were ebay sellers that  this thread has identified as being linked to the same account  The listings themselves sent up warning signals, so I passed.  (If you are an experienced Ebay fig buyer, you look for certain things.)  I think it would be very helpful to start a new thread with a heading something like "Ebay sellers with multiple identities" or something of that sort. Barring that, is it possible to place the relevant conclusions at the beginning of the thread????   Not everyone is going to read 3 pages of this thread to get to the punch line.

Last week or so I edited the first post to include pretty much everything with the exception of the recent scuffle on GardenWeb.  I may still report something later.

I could edit the title of the thread but am not sure what would make it more meaningful.

This is very sad and upsetting thread I just  discovered about that scam that goes on on Ebay . However...  I just wanted to clarify something here...
You did mention scammer that also goes by name katerina and Kate.  Hmmm....even though I do have  name Katerina and often use Kate as my nick name and have very Russian last name as well :), I do not have any connections to anything that goes on here.:)  Katerina just happened to be a very popular European name .
I am Christian first of all, then homeschooling mom and very devoted wife, very busy housekeeper and gardener (whenever I can spare some time for my dear garden:)).  I do try to live before God first of all,  to the best of my abilities with honesty, integrity and fairness.
It did take me thousands of dollars to collect my large fig collection, then take care of it, put countless hours of hard labour into it and lots of expensive water here in desert ... you know yourselves what it takes to be a fig lover and collector. For me selling some cuttings on Ebay does help  cover at least some of my expenses and pay for just one more a "must have" fig.  I never changed my names and still go under katerina941 on both Ebay and figs4fun forum, and I also live in AZ (not Brooklyn or PA)
There should be no worries about fig cuttings that  I sell on Ebay. To the best of my knowledge they are genuine and almost all of them originally bought as young trees from great fig collectors who I really trust, like you, Harvey :).  I am still not good at posting all my pictures of the fruits or mother trees, but someday I will be when I am better at it and when I can spare more time and have more fruits from my young orchid and can catch those fruits on camera before they disappear in my childrens' sweet mouth.

So ...here ... I feel better now and should not worry that  I might of gotten  mixed up with the wrong person here. Right ?

I wish you all the best. Blessings to you
Katerina

My nickname is DJ which stands for Dennis Johnson and my wife's name is Jackie.  Get it?

atskor10 (formerly atskor8) of Brooklyn, NY
korina77-2008 of Brooklyn, NY
korina-2009 of Moscow, PA
svet_vasyl-2008 of Moscow, PA

I have seen a copy of a shipping label for cuttings sent by svet_vasyl-2008 and the name is different than that used by atskor10/atskor8.  I don't know if this is a Russian fig mafia ring or what sort of relationship these sellers as well as 2014.gulen have with one another but I suggest avoiding all of these sellers unless they can provide some good explanation of what is going on.

To make it easier to locate significant findings, I've provide links to these pots as an edit to my original post of this thread.

Edit 1/17: It appears likely that eBay user 77peony of Moscow, CA is another eBay user that is part of this group.

This is good information on these Ebay sellers

The recent F4F member abcd has made some interesting posts, appearing to be a newbie fig collector, offering to buy cuttings from others.  In the original post, abcd indicates they have had trouble rooting cuttings and would like to buy more cuttings to keep experimenting.  See http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=7219709 Also, quite interestingly, claiming to have imported Greek fig cuttings released which were released by USDA contrary to very clear regulations that prohibit this.  See http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=7228699

I and others have sold significant quantities of cuttings to abcd, or Alex Gulenok, of River Edge, NJ.  Specifically, I sold Alex 25 cuttings of Panache and 25 cuttings of UCR 184-15 and he received them last Wednesday (January 7th).  I and others are 99% certain that Alex sells under the eBay ID of 2014.gulen (partial name match, same city).

Alex also just recently posted on F4F asking for a source of starter Jolly Tiger plants.  See http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=7234410

The eBay 2014.gulen account was created in October 2014 and has a history of selling 9 varieties of figs in the past month and currently has 21 auctions listed with 9 varieties in addition to those showing up in feedback history of being sold previously. An auction for 184-15 was also active yesterday but apparently someone already purchased those cuttings.  Current listings include Jolly Tiger which is particularly interesting as Alex was just looking for starter plants four days ago and now has cuttings being offered.  See http://www.ebay.com/itm/251789211493 for the current Jolly Tiger listing.  I strongly suspect the striped fig cuttings shown are the Panache cuttings I shipped to Alex last week.

I suspect Alex also uses the eBay account svet_vasyl-2008 which also has a listing for Jolly Tiger with many of the same photos being used.  There was another auction in the Buy It Now format that apparently got sold already.  See http://www.ebay.com/itm/321640705172 for the current listing for suckers.

I and others have suspicions of connections with other eBay accounts but evidence in incomplete.  Maybe Alex (abcd) would like to provide the details.

If you've been the buyer of cuttings from suspicious sellers in the northeast, please send me a PM with details.

I have saved PDF copies of the threads linked above in case they are deleted by abcd.

EDIT- See posts where I have made significant updates at:
http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1285794538&postcount=99
http://www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1285806763&postcount=109

I suggest avoiding any activity with the following eBay users:

2014.gulen
atskor10 (formerly atskor8) *
korina-2009 *
korina77-2008 *
svet_vasyl-2008 *

* It's been confirmed that these eBay users use the same PayPal account.  See post #109 linked above.

Edit 1/17: It appears that eBay user 77peony of Moscow, PA is probably also part of this group.

Also, if anyone has a desire to read a cached copy of abcd's thread before some posts were deleted, it can temporarily be found at http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:b6ep9rzRrXsJ:www.figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post%3Fid%3D7229696%26goto%3Dnextnewest+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Edit 1/18: It appears with 99% certainty that radyslava is another eBay account being used by abcd (Alex Gulenok).
Hi I was contacted by ABCD please find attached screenshots of email communication. I have also bought few black mission cuttings from ebay gulen . Funny because same person was trying to sell me cuttings acting like two different person . I saw your cuttings on eBay Harvey.Do you post to UK please? And do you provide phytosanitary certificate please . I think it's required but I have bought cuttings from usa before and came with no problem . Also can you recommend some early ripening varaities please.
Thanks vinny

Okay, a couple more things to update.

As mentioned previously, I bought 2 cuttings from korina-2009 of Moscow, PA on January 14th.  USPS lost the package, apparently 5 miles from my home.  Under the eBay policies, the buyer is entitled to a refund but the seller did not agree.  After several attempts to get her to make the refund, I left negative feedback for her.  She responded and called me a scammer.  I contacted eBay last night as it was the seller's deadline for making a refund to me and a few hours later eBay sent me my refund.

The entire situation is far from clear.  atskor10 has made several purchases from me on eBay, some at fairly high prices, and has been a good customer.  I don't see any figs sold under this ID.  All of the other IDs seem to only be sellers of fig cuttings, not buyers.  I believe there are 3 or 4 individuals working together somehow.

Another member contacted me and informed me of concerns of cuttings he purchased from 77peony which is used by the same person using the svet_vasyl-2008 account (and maybe others).  The paperwork that arrived with cuttings from 77peony had the following notice which seems to be an effort to cover-up discrepancies for mislabeled fig cuttings.

Well call me crazy but it sounds like a sign TyTy can use when they sell their fig trees. It would have been a lot easier if they just put a question mark next to the variety , RDB ? Vdb? Or add the word possible in front of the variety , or a combo, Possible Rimada ? Lol

There is always going to be bad apples, and the rest of should let them roll away like water from a ducks back.  It seems to be the norm of our modern world, the good people pay for the crimes of everyone else.

With regard to variation, when we were at USDA/UC Davis this summer, we took pix of leaves on all the trees, and you have to sort through a lot of leaves on many trees to find what is the most typical shape for that tree. Some trees every leaf is identical, but many have a wide variation. If you have one-lobed leaves and three lobed leaves and 5-lobed leaves on the same tree, is 5-lobes the typical or proper leaf, and all the rest are under- or mal-formed? Is that just the natural variation for that cultivar? As I have watched leaves this season I have wondered if, maybe, all trees were really 7-lobed but not all leaves fully form. But then there are several styles of 7-lobed leaves...    My Vista has some one-lobed leaves, most are 3-lobed, but there are a significant portion that are 5-lobed, and many of the 3-lobed have 2 rudimentary lobes, as if the should have been 5-lobed. Different years make for different balances, so environment has some affect.  I would bet that I could take a one-lobed leaf off of 40-50% of my trees, regardless of what their dominant leaf pattern is.

Here is my Raspberry Latte: If you look carefully, and follow the leaves up the branch, you will see that the early leaves were deeply sculpted  7-lobed leaves, and the later leaves were 1-lobed, or have 5 barely defined lobes. The one branch you see was 7-lobed for half a season and changed to the less sculpted style for the second half of last season, and stayed that way this whole season. Some branches are one style, others are another style.

[FP988-72]

These two leaves are off of the same tree, two different branches:

[FP988-77]

I know this is an extreme example, but it illustrates the point. I took pix at Davis of some trees that were nearly as radical, and of a Black Mission tree at a friend's collection in Orange County because of this very issue. Some of the branches on his tree absolutely did not look like BM.

My conclusion on leaves is this: They can generally be used to eliminate varieties, or narrow down the possible selections when you are trying to identify an unknown variety, and in some cases are unique enough to narrow it down to a very few choices, but will probably never be a conclusive method of identification. Otherwise, I could take pictures once, and be done with it, but because they change from season to season (leaves and fruit) I keep taking pictures to document and demonstrate the range of what is possible from a given tree - without all the possible range that you would have if you moved the tree to different climates and other conditions. For instance, figs at Davis must be assumed to be caprified. In many cases this greatly enhances or changes the color of the flesh. So when I compare them to figs grown here, often they are not the same. Which one is correct? Both.

Imagine what you drivers license might be like if you hair or skin color changed with latitude. Go from San Diego, on vacation, as a white man with blond hair to North Dakota and become a Latino with red hair. When the Cop in ND stops you and asks for you license, and you give him you CA D/L, he will think you are giving a false ID.

I sent pix of several varieties that I have purchased from Paradise Nursery to the proprietor and she did not recognize them, because they are different in her climate.

I wanted to be able to put everything in a neat little box when I started collecting figs, but I gave up on it a long time ago.

abcd, you have no class at all and are so out of your league here and on ebay.   You need to try to fool people on a different forum.  You will get busted there in time just like here.  Have a good day.

Alex, you are an embarrassment to all good Russians and are full of cagada.

No where does Jon say figs take 5 years to produce true fruit and leaves.

Earlier this week I bought four cuttings from 2014.gulen on eBay before I read this thread. They are labeled:
"FIG TREE "RONDE DE BORDEAUX" 2 CUTTINGS" I wonder what they really are. At least I'll get some practice in rooting fig cuttings.
