There are squirrels running around my back yard. Something took close to 60 Jalepenos off my pepper plants a few weeks ago. I suspect it is a squirrel for those. Hope it is shooting out fireballs for a few days.! Didn't think that they would eat the leaf buds off my figs though.

Crap!  That's the same thing happening to my cuttings in my shop that I just posted about.  For me, it's a Norwegian rat...and I've declared war.

Time to start trapping or otherwise eliminating squirrels now or there will be even more when the figs ripen.

They WILL eat figs!

When I saw the cleanly snipped off shoot my first thought was deer although supposedly figs are not one of their favorite things.  Maybe the deer are extra hungry where you are?

Critters!  There are so many kinds, and they just don't stop!  At least if you have roots, the cutting will bounce back, so you got hope.  Fungus Gnats and Gophers are my worst enemy.  Don't think we have rats, but not too confident about that.  We do have voles, and every plant here has 2' of gopher wire surrounding it's trunk.  They can't get through that, but voles AKA field mice love to eat bark.

Good luck getting rid of whatever critter this is!

definitely not deer, (enclosed backyard). I'll look into squirrel protection. They are pretty sneaky and tease my dogs everyday.

In my yard in Hayward, I have deer, raccoons, squirrels, turkeys, possums, and even roof rats.  They peel my oranges.  They eat all the new growth on my roses.  They eat the walnuts, leaving only the shells.  I understand the deer don't like figs, but I wouldn't put it past them.
