Hi. Not sure where introductions are supposed to be. My name is Nina. I am a cosmetic surgeon by profession. I have always loved gardening. I have a row of dragonfruit plants, some hot chillies, and other veggies, but a newbie at fig growing. I never knew they can grow here in tropical Manila. I was researching about figs when I ran across this forum. I just bought fig cuttings a few months ago and have a some of them potted already. I hope to learn a lot from the group, gain new friends, and hopefully expand my fig varieties. I am very glad to be here. :-) __________________ Manila, Philippines

Welcome, Nina! I am also a newbie to the group & I think we'll find many of the same problems; I am in Hawaii outside of Hilo so we both have a hot, humid, rainy climate to contend with. This doesn't agree with all figs but I am sure that you will find some good advice, I suspect especially from growers in the SE US. John

Hi nina. Richie from louisiana. If you start looking at pictures of figs. The are,very beautiful. I like the way martinenca rimada looks The fig it self is colorful. Welcome Nina! I bet you will be great at grafting figs once you establish a few! Looking forward to seeing photos of your figs. We live in Southern California, and moved two years ago from one home to another. A few tags got lost, so I'll be posting photos when figs get ripe for members to identify. These are all "known" figs I grew from cuttings. Just lost the tags. I do have one unknown that was growing wild in a field, and I rooted some cuttings from that. There are baby figlets on it now, and I hope members here can Identify the fig for me. There are a lot of helpful members here. Suzi __________________ Zone 9b, Southern California. Mabuhay, Nina! Which varieties are you starting out with? I haven't seen any fig trees growing in Manila. You may want to consider growing them in pots and bringing them indoors during the monsoon season. __________________ -Charles Cool Pacific NW Zone 8b

Welcome Nina! You came to the right place! These guys here will help you get started! I visited your country back in 1985. Boy it gets super hot there! But I love the food and would love to visit again some day! Next year this time, you will probably have 50 fig trees!!!!! HA! Hi Nina, Great to see another tropical fig grower posting on this forum! Figs are getting more and more popular here in Thailand (and grow really well, at least this time of year - the dry season). Most of the fig growers here post in the Thai language on Facebook, I get my wife to translate as she's Thai and has her own collection of Figs. I have only been growing mine myself for the past few weeks. I have Japanese BTM6, Masui Dauphine, "Australian" (Flanders?), Brown Turkey, Black Jack, White Genoa, Black Genoa, Peter's Honey and Violette de Bordeaux. But they are all just very small plants started from air layers. The most common Japanese fig I believe is Masui Dauphine. BTM6 is just the first variety that made it from Japan to Thailand many years ago. I have been told it's a version of Brown Turkey, but larger and sweeter. I can't say as my plants are too young. My favorite? I don't know, ask me again in a few more months when I have had a chance to taste more figs. So far a few of the figs I've had tasted strongly of peach and/or apricots for the first second or two. Those are the ones that convinced me I should grow my own figs. Cuttings in Thailand are generally about $10 U.S., though common varieties may be half that.But mostly people here buy air layered plants if the variety is grown locally. The price is the same but the risk of failure much lower. But variety is severely limited. Maybe one or two kinds. Some are unknown. :-) I asked about Japan coz I have a friend from there, who is bringing home some cuttings.
