I accidently cut a large 2 foot surface root off my 3 foot chicago fig tree. If I put that long root in pot with soil will a new tree grow or am I wasting my time? Any ideas? Also does it sound normal that the chicago fig which has not yet woken up is a deep copper color? Thanks for all the good advice.

I bet it will. Good science project though. Let use know. In two weeks you may see some growth. Leave the thickest part close to the surface. You may want to wax the thick end that is cut so it dont dry out and shoots may start from the side near the waxed end. This is all guess work i am written here. Thanks for sharing. You may have discovered a new way to root.

Hard to say. We moved a four year old fig tree that was in a pot with it's roots in ground, and we pruned the roots off to get the pot in the car. Many were left in the ground. When we checked back on that house prior to it's sale, no tree had grown. There were plenty of live roots there, but no tree grew. Good luck with your root!
