Very nice start on those beauties Chuck. I love my Chicago Hardy, very underrated, but not by the people who grow it.

~ i agree coop,i have heard them to be really good,i need cold hardy here so i think this is a good one. i should have around 9 or ten i got some rooting in green house too.  fitzski on our figs sent me them,i can start a c-h orchard if they all make it~

~New to growing figs, I currently have tiny fig plants which are supposedly Little Ruby, Violette de Bordeaux, Desert King, and Petite Negri. I hope these were accurately labeled!
Now rooting LSU Gold and Purple, Celeste, Panache, Peter's Honey, and Unknown Varieties from cuttings, thanks to generous forum members.

Figs on my current wish list (along with any others recommended):
Osborne Prolific, Battaglia Green, Smith, Kadota, Italian Honey, Atreano, Verte or Green Ischia, Panache, Peter's Honey, Black Madeira, Smith, Noir de Caromb, etc. ~

~i just used reg peat moss from the farm store it comes in 2cu ft bale,and i soak it in a bucket of water,it is very dry in the bale. then wring it out until your knuckles are white ,you got to wring it out well. then i use the walmart plastic shoe boxes. i layer them in there covering with the damp moss. i then place it on top the freezer .and thats all i do. reg surgham peat moss,i have used the long fibered or green moss and like it well too.

Those roots look great.  I used dampened regular peat moss with good results last year.  This year I am trying coir and so far it is also working well.  The key to any of the these pre-rooting methods is the level of moisture.  I find that no matter how hard I wring out the water I still end up mixing in some additional dry material to get to a moisture level I am comfortable with.

I also had to add material to my moss and i still lost two cuttings. I finally moved half cuttings into perlite snd half into ProMix.

~ yes i agree, i open my totes that have starts in in the green house usually daily some times i might miss a day ,and my shoeboxes in house on freezer with these in this post i open alot (usually daily) for at leat 5-10 min to air out some

~drying out to quick,and fungus gnats is my biggest problem,i have stuff comming  now to get rid of them pesky gnats~

I just bought and started using gnatrol from a guy on EBay who's username is the name of the gnatrol he uses (I think). Anyway, I'm hoping it kills them cuz they got bad in my grow room. Plus I've got fly strips hanging and they are covered after a week.

Perlite never worked for me cuz my weird hours at work. They would dry out and if I tried to keep that from happening, I'd have to over water and they died from that. I'm just now trying long fibered Sphagnum. Hopefully I can make it work. Still new to it all

~yes i like the long moss and parafilm method thre best,long moss i do in plastic shoe boxes with damp long moss, when i do parafilm i wrap the cutting in parafilm to about an inch below  soil surface,and pot it straight into potting soil ,i keep them in humidity bins and  heat mats,air out daily.i use grow lights on these to ,shoe boxes i put on top of freezer and keep dark,the parafilm method is done in the greenhouse in clear totes ,heat mats and grow lights.adding parafilm pictures check it out you might want to try this if work or job keeps you away,this method requires less time on your part. chicago hardy (fritzski) our figs parafilm method 001.JPG  chicago hardy (fritzski) our figs parafilm method 002.JPG  chicago hardy (fritzski) our figs parafilm method 003.JPG

I appreciate the tip of wringing out the moss so thoroughly, and think this is the answer as to why I struggled with rooting in this way. It was probably just a little too wet.

yes, Charlie, I think you do good with Parafilm.  I also had the same problem with perlite...it dries quickly and I am out all day and home late so it was tricky.  I still have a few left in perlite and a few have surprised me because I thought they had died and now I'm seeing roots.  I like your pictures.  Thanks for posting!
