For a while now I've been thinking about taking a "fig field trip" down to California and visiting UCD. I'm planning on driving down there around August and I was wondering if there was somewhere I should call or if it's just ok to show up. Any info would be greatly appreciated best regards, Truman.

See this thread . I would not advise "just showing up".

Don't they do a field day in August? Or is it later in the year?
