A few years ago, my neighbors gave me a sad, spindly, almost-dead fig tree. It had been a gift that they didn't really care for, and it didn't have any identifying tags.
I'm growing this fig in the San Francisco Bay Area. It produces two crops a year. I assume it's a pretty common variety. My guess, based on nothing at all, is that its a Mission fig. I reckon that's the most common fig sold in stores around here.
The fruit needs to be super-ripe before it's ready. When fully ripe, the fruit is very flavorful, with an astonishing flavor of -- among other things -- toasted coconut.
Any thoughts?

It does resemble my black mission. Great job in rescuing the fig!

My approach to garden plant identification is to look for the most common varieties.

When they ripen, I'll be pestering you all with identifications of other figs that fell into my hands over the years. I've got a few more Mystery Varieties. This is the first year either of them have produced fruit. Not bad for growing during a multi-year drought.
