how cold hardy is this tree in zone 6b ? would it need winter protection or not ? thanks ,hope many chime in ?

In zone 6, I would protect any variety.  Older trees have a better chance to survive once established, but with recent winters, even those have died.
My MBVS dies every winter but it's unprotected.  It comes back very strong and with plenty of figs.  Hope this helps.
