Hello Planning a trip to Sicily and S. Italy in September. With the popularity of Sicilian and S. Italian figs I would love to see them actually growing there and find out a little fig history about them. Does anyone know of any nurseries or other places like Pomona in Puglia located in Sicily or Calabria? __________________ Pino, zone 6, Niagara, JCJ Acres Wish; Peace on earth and more figs Italian 258, Galicia Negra, Luv, trade suggestions welcome.

List of native Sicilian varieties. Palamitani is most dry fig over there.

I have friends in Terrasini. Will you be in that area of Sicily? I can't say that they know anything about figs but they may know someone who does. Figs do grow just wild all over Sicily. I haven't been able to find a conservatory in Sicily, but try searching for an agriturismo that has a fig tree on the property. Just this past June, I stayed at a farmhouse in Erice that had somewhere around 80 fig trees, split between only two varieties. If anyone reading this hasn't yet but would like to stay at an agriturismo, I recommend that you rent a car as they're often located a bit far outside the city. Ask the property about the best way to arrive. Have a great time. Since I was just in Sicily for about 3 weeks, I could offer some advice if you haven't been before. @Aaron - will be flying to Rome and then to Palermo and renting a car there. Don't know where I am staying yet. Terrasini looks nice! @Levar- thanks for the offer will search for agriturismo locations would be great to stay there will PM you once I know more. Be sure to stop in Matera, you will not regret it , if possible stay at one of the cave hotels, this city dates back 10,000 year ,best food, nicest people, not expensive but be ready for stairs and steep roads . This will be on your way to Pumona you will see fig trees all over the place. These figs are in Enna, Sicily. I bought cuttitngs 2 year gao. Many varieties are common fig,very good taste. and many smyrna. You can collect cuttings from fig tree they grow in house or garden that the fig tree suppose to be good variety. Some fig tree roadside produces very beautiful fruit but smyrna (I bought and grow in no wasp land)

Thanks to all for the tips but given the gravity of the earthquake situation in Italy I am postponing my trip for now. This quake completely wiped out some beautiful old historic villages in seconds. These villages were built on top of the mountains hundreds of years ago and have withstood many earthquakes. Yet the characteristics of this quake very shallow (4km) and concentrated in a 30 mile line made a pile of rubble of 3 villages in 8 seconds. The people didn't have a chance. At this time there is a state of emergency and the after shocks are continuing some 470 since yesterday, last one 4.3 just a while ago flattened more buildings and sent rescuers running. Don't know if that is normal to have that many aftershocks? Che sono belle sti fico. Those figs are beautiful. I was in Rome, Italy this Easter, next year I plan on going to Sicily. I can't wait! I will be close to Terrasini. Luigi, Belli fichi davvero! che sapore (and what a taste)! How can you achieve that taste in container grown figs I wish I knew?
