* * 12/18/15 4:30 pm.  All cuttings Gone.  * *

Hello everyone. Have been very busy with new baby boy, winterizing figs, eBay, a few construction projects, etc, etc,..... It's that time again! Our Sweet Diana Unknown had another good year. She gave us lots of delicious figs and air layers that everyone enjoyed.  The squirrels were taking too much fruit this year so we had to give her a major haircut and trimmed her waaaaaay down.  We're willing to share but enough is enough!  The cuttings are ready to go. Going to try and keep the costs down for everyone and do 5 or 6, 9" to 10" cuttings for $5. PayPal danny@nycfigs.com. Please PayPal as "Friends & Family" and PM your address.

Sweet Diana Unknown has been in the ground for 7 years here in NYC, Zone 7a. Last year was going to be the final time that she would be protected for the winter but going to do it one more time due to the aggressive pruning.  The parent tree belongs to a neighbor across the street and it is also in ground. The tree originally came from Italy 36+ years ago (Don't know the region) and has grown to two stories high. It is very hardy and has never been covered for the winter. She toughed out both years of the polar vortex like a champ.

Sweet Diana Unknown grows like a weed. She produces 2 crops of small green/purplish figs that are very, very sweet. The pulp is strawberry red and has just the right amount of juice. She has a nice texture with a thin skin and no seed crunch. She's probably a variety of Celeste but don't know for sure. Here are some pictures from this year.

Thanks for the offer.  PM sent.  I rode the NYC RR into NYC and remember seeing many trees wrapped for the winter along the RR in back yards and gardens.  I'm in the same zone 7 but the city micro climate may be different.  Until I have a few established trees I'm using pots.  Thanks again for the opportunity to have one of those Italian fig trees.

I use to ride the subway through Brooklyn a lot more and see the same thing often.  It was funny to see all those trees wrapped up like that.  When you ride now there aren't as many.  I'm guessing it's because of the 2013/2014 polar vortex that killed a lot of trees.  The neighborhoods are ever changing, too and sometimes new owners don't care about fig trees.  It's a shame that all of those wonderful and old varieties are going to be completely gone one day.  They really are treasures.  I guess that's what makes all of what we do a little more special.  Preserving a little of the past for future generations to enjoy.

Hey Armando, you might have a cultivar named Deanna. It produces sweet yellow figs. It's very different than the one Danny has.

Danny you mention you're not going to protect the tree in the future, so once these trees get fairly big they do ok? Do not need further protection? I live in a zone a full zone colder than you. I do have a micro climate,  front of the house, south facing, next to house. I'm hoping some can make it here as the warmth from the house radiates into the ground. Plus blocked from north winds.
I may never get a fig to grow here , I will have backups in containers. I also have Florea, not the best tasting fig, although it is extremely hardy. I want to try that one too.

Thank you everyone for the kind words.  You're going to love Sweet Diana!

Drew - I think I say that I'm going to stop protecting Sweet Diana for the winter every year and every year I wind up wrapping her.
I haven't done it yet but this year we are experiencing above average temperatures and I'm not that worried.  Like I said, the mother
tree is over 2 stories high and has never been protected; she's doing just fine.  I did take a large air-layer and plant it in-ground at
the country house which is Zone 5b and she is unprotected.  It has been a little warmer than usual there, too, but the ground just
started to get hard and the temps are dipping into the teens regularly now.  Averaging in the mid to upper twenties during the day.
I checked on Sweet Diana last weekend and the branches are still flexible and alive.  I guess we'll see in the spring.
