I am 72 and I have learned over the years that guarantees are pretty much worthless for some things. Sometimes you just have to trust and take that leap of faith. I ordered several of these plants because it just feels right. I would pay $7 + s&h any day to have someone root my cuttings for me. If you can't get your head wrapped around this offer then with all due respect don't make the purchase. If you hesitate going into this endeavor you probably will be looking for the negative and most likely will be dissatisified with the outcome.Pleast don't take the wrong way. It is just the way things work in my view.

In a lot of cases that would be a good question yet James has already proven his self as very trustworthy on this forum.
I second that completely. I purchased 20 trees and I have no concerns whatsoever about receiving them. In fact, when I raised concerns about shipping to AZ in July (>110 F) he went above and beyond to say that we would work out a shipping date that would ship the trees in a safe temperature range. His cutting sale was awesome and his cuttings were extremely healthy and well packaged. I have no doubt the trees that we pre-ordered (crazy awesome cultivars for crazy awesome prices) will be the same.

I ordered five trees that I do not currently have and thanked Dave for his generous offer. You see I have over 100 varieties and some cost me more than $150 a piece such as Col de Dame Gris and Noir when they were hot. At these prices you do the math. Some restaurants charge you before you eat and some others charge you after. James is charging you before you eat at buffet prices. If you have doubts about the price, some of the best things in life are free. For example my Col de Dame Blanc was free and it is currently performing better than the Noir and Gris. What are the risks? There is a chance that some cuttings don't make it and you don't get your order filled. This was addressed by James. As far as the dates are concerned, I've had plants shipped to me (from other sources) in July when it was over 100 degrees outside and it did not bother them.

Just wanna take a second and let everyone know that if you use your credit card through PayPal, you will be protected for 180 days from PayPal AS WELL AS your credit card's policy. Most card companies will protect you up to the limit of "up to five months after the last possible delivery date of the item." We had dozens of people use this for a product that was almost a year and a half late on another forum, and I don't remember anyone have any difficulties getting their money back. Just good general knowledge to have, sounds like it won't be an issue here though.

I wanted to share some pics of one of the new methods I'm using to root and grow fig trees this winter. I heat the water in the big pools, float hard plastic wading pools on that warm water, and then put fig cuttings/plants into those wading pools. This gives me bottom heat, a nice zone of warm humid air, and well-distributed sunlight (from the random spinning of the wading pools throughout the day). It also gets the plants up at a nice height to work with, so I don't have to bend over to tend to them :) Most of these have been started over the last 3 weeks, with the ones with the most green growth being the oldest. There's one Hardy Chicago in the first pic that has much more green growth than the others; it's been out there for 6 weeks and was part of an original threesome of cuttings that I tested (the other 2 leafed out even faster and were sold a couple of weeks ago). The water temperature has been fairly cool, mostly staying in the upper 60's. Rooting progress has been okay, but I'm going to raise the water temp up to around 75F to accelerate growth. I'm also considering hanging grow lights over the pools to further accelerate growth.

lol Blue :) Thanks for the kind words, everyone! It's definitely super humid in there, but there's enough air movement that it isn't problematic when vegetating. It's not a good place for ripening figs, though--I get a lot of splitting in there. I'm heading out now to pot up some more...

I would suggest RdB (Ronde de Bordeaux) Hardy Chicago Improved Celeste, and Desert King. DK will give you a good breba (early) crop, but no main crop. RdB, HC, and IC will give you early main crops. All four should be very productive for you. If you want a 5th, I'd be tempted to get one of Hardy Chicago's close relatives, like Black Bethlehem, Gino's Black, Marseilles Black VS, etc. That family of figs is known as the Mt. Etnas, and they're renowned for their ability to consistently produce good fruit in marginal zones. I love them.

Here are some updated pics :) The bananas continue to stand guard, but their leaves are yellowing a bit from temps getting down to around 40F near the roof during a recent 0F cold spell outside.
This Hardy Chicago is around 7 and a half weeks old, and looks like it's ready to start getting some fertilizer. I root the cuttings in ProMix HP without any additives.
Mare de Deu in center, Kure Beach on left:
This Black Madeira isn't as old as the others, it was just recently potted up. But it's got one nice root and a greening tip, so it's off to a good start:
Petite Negri:
This whole tub is Conadria. Since this is a designated 'Conadria tub', I'm re-using some old cups that have other names on them.)
The two tubs in the back are the most recent. The tub with the most growth was filled first, the one closest to the camera was filled about 10 days later, and the two in back were about 10 days after that.
Due to the extremely high humidity and the intermittent 'rain' from water condensing and dripping from the roof, the potting mix is absorbing a lot of moisture and is wetter than ideal for rooting cuttings. It looks like the cuttings that were already starting to grow at the time they were potted have continued to grow, while many of the 15-20 cuttings that were totally dormant when potted haven't done much.
So to play things safe, all pre-rooting will be done indoors in humidity bins like I've done in past years. When their buds break and their roots are pushing up against the edge of their clear 16oz cups, I'll move them out into the brighter and wetter environment in the greenhouses.
Stay tuned for pics of Bin Mountain, it's holding 300 cups of impending figgy awesomeness :)

Well i was thinking of making a 2nd order. I just don't have that much room. i would like to try some for a year and see how the figs work for me. And then add more if needed! How is this working for you? Do you plan to do this next year? Will you offer cutting again too? Your cuttings were excellent. If you're not going to do this next year, I may just order more right now. Still some I want to try are not sold out. Mostly cold hardy types.

I'll offer cuttings again next year and do it as a fundraiser of some sort (10% to f4ff?). I probably won't do another $7 tree project for 2017, but you'll be able to get them for $9-$15 on my '2017 Fig Trees ' page.

James, Thanks for the info and thanks for doing this! Most awesome about 2017! Very cool. I'm going to wait though, most rare types don't work here, so I don't want them. I'm in a short season area. I will try some longer types for fun, but Black Maderia and such make little sense to grow here. I'll make an order for 2017 once I have my 2016 order. Oh a question what exactly is Rob's Genovese Nero Not. Is it Robs? Or NOT! As modern use of "not" suggest it is not Rob's but something else.

James - with the recent pics and success it seems you have with this awesome new method. Do you think it looks like you might be ahead of schedule on some of the plants? Obviously you probably have a cap on space in those pools and when you can introduce the new varieties. Love the progress pics , cant wait to see how things look in a few weeks.

Hi Matt, I would say some plants are out in front, and that the overall project is more or less on schedule. The plants that are the furthest along are the leftover cuttings from my outdoor in-ground trees for the $2 cutting sale. That's why you see so many Italian Honey, Conadria, Strawberry Verte, LSU Tiger, etc in these early pics; those are the ones that would be ready for spring delivery, so the only orders that will get shipped in the early spring are the ones that are entirely composed of those varieties. The vast majority of orders involve varieties that won't be ready until summer, so they won't ship out early.

Most of them, yes, but the early wakers of some of the other varieties are mixed in. The big majority of those other more notable varieties (Black Madeira, CdD's, etc) have been going into humidity bins last week and this week, and a bunch more are getting loaded into cloners this week.

James, thanks again, for all that you are doing! I may have heard through the fig tree, of an effort that fell through for you to obtain Native de Argentile... can I pitch in a little bit to help out in that regard?

That would be great, thanks for the nice offer :) I could indeed make use of some extra NdA cuttings, and would be happy to send you some money for them. I'll pm you about it. There are a few others like NdA that I'd like to get some extras of, and there are also a lot of unlisted varieties that people had requested. Maybe I should post all those varieties here in this thread to see if anybody has extra cuttings they'd like to pitch in?

Am very new to figs and also very confused as to which will do good in my zone Z6 SE mi. Can someone at a quick glance of what is still available on his list point me in the right direction. I would prefer the more rare varieties. Thanks in advance. Dale

Hi Dale, are you going to grow them in-ground or in pots? If you're growing them in-ground, these should produce well for you: Malta Black Black Bethlehem Marseilles Black Improved Celeste
