Mothers. 

In the 2nd pic you can see a tub of mothers on the left and another tub of mothers on the right that was pruned back a little over a week ago and is already starting to grow back.

OT idea: the tender, red terminal bud would taste great sliced thinly crossed-wise and mixed in a shredded barbecue chicken and fresh herb salad, dressed with a squeezed lemon and its zest. James, try it sometime; It's mouth-watering good.

As for an update:  Today was a big day!  I hired a work crew to help with all the work that needs done, and today was their first day.  My toes, hamstrings, and biceps are all cramping as I sit here, but we got a lot done, so it was worth it :)  I'm also bringing in a construction crew to put up a large new steel-framed tunnel with roll-up sides, so hopefully they'll get that done soon while the work crew and I are busy working on the orchard (mulching/planting/irrigation/etc) and the figs (up-potting, rooting, air-layering, irrigating, etc).

My outdoor figs are absolutely thriving!  They ripened their first figs in early September last year, and they look to be a month or more ahead of that pace this year.  The most impressive thing about them is that they didn't start growing any earlier this spring than last, it's just that they've been growing so much faster than last year that they've made up time.  I think I'm going to have my first really nice outdoor harvest season this year, and should have tons of cuttings as well.  (Generally speaking, the outdoor in-ground orchard is primarily intended for producing cuttings and whatever ideally-ripened fruit harvest I can get, whereas the figs in the tunnels are dedicated to the propagation project, though I will pull from outdoors to help with the project whenever necessary.)  I'll post some pics later after I recuperate a bit.

WOW... All sellers on eBay, Amazon, Facebook and such are done and gone. Who wants to buy cuttings now if you can get starter tree for much less?

waiting for your figs is like making yeast bread.   You know its going to be outstanding but not instant.    And nobody phones Santa and asks him to come a couple weeks early.  LOL    So hot and humid here I am glad you are running a little behind.  Keep up the good work my friend and "fig elf".

Can anyone give me some advice on how to care for these small trees after they are delivered?I ordered these as gifts and the beneficiaries probably don't have experience with figs..or bare root trees.Will a good potting mix work?Maybe a Promix? Light and airy,and easy on the water?

These will also arrive pretty late in the season.Should they be potted up and then hardened off gradually,and then be put out for the remaining couple of months?Would they be better off just put under lights until next season,and then hardened off etc?These will be going to Southern Oregon,and also Humbolt county.If lights are the way to go,what would you recommend?Cool white floro tubes?

Thanks for the advice alanmercieca.

Sounds solid to me.I really wondered about giving supplemental lighting,but maybe guys are doing that for getting plants established.I hear ya on the light airy soil too.A good suggestion on watching the water as well.I pay pretty close attention to what a plant is a pot weighs,and can get a feel for when watering is needed.

Good point about the winter weather advice.My friend is in Mendo county,not Humbolt,but as you mentioned,he rarely gets any really cold weather.My Daughter in Medford however normally gets winter weather into the low 20's and upper teens,and fog that can last for weeks solid.She will need to bring her plants into the garage for the bad part of the winter.

Yes, I do think I'll be able to start shipping out orders at the end of the month.  Most of the trees should be ready by then, and the slower ones can finish growing while I'm busy packaging and shipping out the ready ones.  It's going to take a while to package and ship them all out (200 hours?), so it may be a few weeks beyond the end of the month before you get your trees. 

I'll email each person before shipping to verify their address and to make sure that it's a good time to ship :)

Maybe start with the colder regions to avoid heat. Even here in Michigan, it's 90 plus degrees right now, just about everyday. Hottest summer I ever remember! My figs are exploding from it too! My 2nd year and I should get hundreds of figs. I'm going to let them ripen as long as possible.

For people in the north where it starts getting cold mid to late September, what is the recommendation?  Pot and let the leaves fall off as the nights get cool, then allow to go dormant within the first few weeks of arrival?  I'd prefer not to struggle to keep them warm and well lit throughout the winter.  It was more difficult than I thought and the plants struggled a lot more than the dormant ones to adjust to the outside move come spring.  I think the dormant plants had an extra month of growth where the inside plants sat dormant after moving outside.

My lights are taken, I plan to let them go dormant. The ordered figs are growing right now, nothing different from the figs I have now. I will treat them the same.

Drew, I think your idea is a good one.  By the end of August the nights will be getting colder up here and the day time temps will be safer for shipment and having a plant sit in a mailbox.  Also, it will give the plants time to acclimate to the cooling temps and more naturally transition into dormancy so that we can properly store them dormant for the winter.

~yea frank good idea,i just recieved two tiny tissue culture trees from wellspring in florida i'm in pa.those roots were really dry but they were potted yesterday  when i received them. i watered them in good and set in shade,today they looked like they never even were in florida,but again they came in small tiny 2" pots and they were small,i have bought quite a few trees from them and in the hottest time of year and had all of them prosper well ~

James, nobody has patience like a fig lover. We think nothing of ordering up to a year in advance. We can spot the tiniest new nub instantly, peek at it several times a day while envisioning the plump, juicy fig to come and not think it too burdensome that there is a wait for that fig. I had just ordered from you this morning and was very glad to see in this thread that you care more about your plants than the quick dollars. Keeping your customers posted on it when you think it might reflect negatively on you speaks more about your integrity than ebay reviews ever could, in my opinion. I have no worries my figs will come....I can see them already :)

Nonetheless, it's probably a good idea to check in here every couple of weeks, if only to say, "not yet."  The date has slipped a few times, and the latest estimate was the end of this month.  We're there now :)

I've been following this since it was initially posted with curiosity. It seemed unlikely greenfin would be able to meet so many orders for such rare varieties. Now, 9 months later no one has received a thing and it seems greenfin is no longer answering emails or messages.

Sorry to say, but I think everyone bought into a Ponzi scheme but no one is getting a thing. He got his greenhouse heated for the winter and that's all. I'd demand my money back if I tried to buy anything. Besides, he bought cuttings on eBay to grow out without proving they are true to type (I know because he bought from me). One can hope all the sellers were honest, but we all know mistakes happen.

If you're thinking of buying for 2017, don't. He hasn't come through for spring of 2016! Take your money elsewhere. I can't believe the moderator has let this scam stay active for so long.

NOBODY should be making comments unless they have proof!! Several of us have dealt with James before with his cuttings! Unless you can prove what you are saying, it's best not to say anything that could ruin a person's reputation!

It is not exactly true that greenfin is not answering emails. I contacted him with my concerns about the lack of updates and questioned the status of the project. This is an excerpt from his reply of September 2nd (I would not feel comfortable quoting from his email and posting here but because he did not post his update as he indicated and because of the amount of $ involved I think it is appropriate)...


"I've started shipping out some of the orders, but it's just a slow trickle. The hangup is that there are about a dozen varieties that have lagged behind, at first because of slow growth, but also because of difficult rooting which caused a lot (over half?) of them to fail. For example, whereas my propagation success rates for most varieties has been around 80-90%, my success rate with turning cuttings of the troublemakers like Black Madeira/I-258/Figo Preto/Maltese Beauty/Native de Argentile/etc into bonafide trees has been around 50% at best. That means I'm going to have to do another prune/root/grow cycle to further multiply the stock, which I think is going to add another 6-8 weeks.

I am very, very sorry about being so late! I feel horrible about these delays, they put my stomach in knots. I'm planning on doing updates on f4f tonight, and am absolutely dreading it. I hate letting people down like this.

The good news is that the project is still progressing and everyone will still get their trees, even if I have to heat all my greenhouses to keep them growing into the winter"

I still have my concerns and he did not respond yet to my follow up question where I asked point blank if he can deliver the March 2017 trees on time. I have been concerned about putting in any more orders for myself before I see some orders fulfilled. I have not been able to understand how he can sell cuttings this winter of all the varieties he indicates he is having difficulty propagating and delivering that are past due (late August was the last update for the 2016 trees but now it looks like ???).
Anyway, it is not true that he is not responding to email and just because I do not understand his process does not mean that he is involved in anything but a well intentioned project that has encountered difficulties... I do have concerns but feel it is a little early to storm the castle.
