Congratulations! Be sure to let us know when it fruits! Personally I am dying for the peloponnisiaka aspra sika. Do you have any idea of the difference in taste between the two?

Of course juvenile leaves like this are not a good determinate of the final appearance...

Mavra sika is the black one. Mavra is Greek for black. I have this one from Bass. It is one of the best black figs I have-very rich.

There are two trees with very different leaves with the Vasilika Sika name. One is from Belleclare Nursery, which has the long-fingered leaves and is actually Dalmatie. The fruit is green, very large, and a syrupy red flesh. The sweetest fig I've ever tasted. The true Vasilika Sika has more of a rounded leaf pattern and also a green fig with red flesh. I have never tasted this one, so I cannot comment on its flavor, but there are several topics with pictures and descriptions. I did acquire the real one and *might* get some figs from it this year.

Yes, Frank. The fruit in my insert looks like Dalmatie but the leaves I am not sure. Yes, there has been confusion about this variety.

It seems pretty clear by the leaf shape, growth habit, and fruit that Stella, Vasilika Sika (Belleclare) and Dalmatie are related. But are they identical? They may be but to my knowledge no one has presented any real evidence that is the case. It would be interesting to know what the history of Vasilika Sika (Belleclare) fig is and how it got its name. Perhaps they (or their source) made a mistake and they mis-named a Dalmatie. However, since a large, highly reputable fig nursery used the Vasilika Sika name for their variety, and sold it under that name, that is what I will use as well. However, I do now add the (Belleclare) suffix to distinguish it from other figs named Vasilika Sika. It seems a little harsh to say that this variety is an imposter since that name for the Belleclare variety is pretty firmly entrenched here in the U.S. On the other hand if you are Greek and grew up eating a fig called Vasilika Sika which is clearly different from the Belleclare fig then I get why you might be a little put off by American fig naming habits! Richie, it sounds like yours has a more direct Greek connection. There is also one found in the U.S. by Herman2 which I am growing. There are other examples of this, of course, such as the Sucrette (UCD) and the Sucrette (MP) which seem to be two different figs. Then there are the different Paradiso varieties. Yes, fig naming is a tricky business!

Think if people are going to sell beleclare vasilika sika.... the should use the suffix. Thats really what this post is for. Not that i am upset with my first purchase but i was expecting the greek one.

Yes, I agree and now do use the Belleclare suffix to reduce confusion. However, it was only relatively recently recently that in the U.S. there are figs other than the Belleclare one in circulation that are called V.S. I was thinking that Dalmatie is actually a Greek fig too. It seems likely that the Belleclare fig originates from Greece. As it is a green fig from Greece you can imagine how the confusion arose. For what it is worth mine came from Gene Hosey and here is his description. Note that DiPaola was one of the owners of the Belleclare nursery.Vasilika Βασιλικά Greece Green Blood red to violet Bifera Bears a large pear shaped fig; according to DiPaola, this fig variety goes back 2000 years. Results of some online sleuthing indicate that this variety and Markopo¡¡ì²lou Black are produced for fresh consumption in southern Attica and in the island prefectures of Cyclades, Dodekanisou and Crete

Does Vasilika Sika (Belleclare) have a tendency to split? Also can someone describe the taste? Thanks

Thanks Richie! I see Frank's post now and it does describe my Dalmatie as well! This Dalmatie does take a few years to start producing figs. But you won't be disappointed. The figs on mine did split one year when I had it in a greenhouse. In the open I haven't had a problem with splitting even in heavy rain. Also what I really like about this fig is that it continues to ripen nice figs even in cool temps and shade.

Richie this is the leaf of the air layer I took from the VS I sent you, growing indoors in the sand. The plant is about 4 ft tall now. Leaves are huge. Yours was a survivor of the single node experiment and Gloria has the other. The original cutting came from Hershell. I don't know where he got it.

Yours was a one node and yes. It grew to the size you got and air layered it in August, removed in October and brought it inside.
