Hi my name is Olivia and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. Anyone else reading this living in South Africa? Okay so my parents have this gorgeous, healthy fig tree and I was hoping someone could identify which type it is so that I could learn more about it and I would like to eventually try growing cuttings. The tree is about 10 years old and was a shoot/seedling/baby (not sure the term used) from my grans tree, basically it started growning next to her tree so she dug it up and gave it to my parents. It gives the most delish purple figs around late january/ early february (my birthday time) and is my favourite fruit ever! We all fight over the figs every year. My dad trys to care for it but doesn't really do much except have it pruned once a year and water it and give it some home made compost. Its really heathy and happy anyways. Okay so any advice would be great and I will try attaching pictures for identification. Thanx so much and please bare with me, im a beginner! Welcome miss olivia to the forum. It would be helpful if you could cut the fig in half with a knife so we ha e a smooth suface of the inside pulp and set it on a mature leaf so we can help you out before cutting it open first take pics of the side of the fig and then the bottom. A only one fig needed. Also take the pic on a plate of counter if possible. Looks really good. . Thanks for posting. Welcome to the forum Liv! That tree certainly is very healthy. Congrats. Looks delicious too. Don't have an ID but those leaves look pretty unique. Very shiny. Olivia Welcome. I would bet it is a brown turkey subvariety called Roxo de valinhos (in Brazil). The growth charactaristic, leafs and fruit match to my knowledge. Welcome! I'll bet that tree is lonely and would like a few other varieties to keep it company. When your father prunes that tree he can cut the branches into 7-12" pieces, root them and sell them. Hello Liv Welcome to the forum. Congratulations for your very nice figs and a robust very healthy tree I believe the figs you showing now are the tree's main crop ripening through the current month, ... February..correct? You may have picked its breba crop back in November.. Have you any fig pictures from those figs ? We call these Nov/Dec fruit: - brebas - and they are always larger than the ones you are picking now As for the variety, IMO they seem to be Brown Turkey . Francisco Portugal
