Hello
As some of my dormant figs are starting to push bud.  I am reviewing last year's photos to update my notes and decide on my keepers.

This fig was purchased at Valoze Greenhouse; http://valozesgreenhouse.com/about/

Brought over from Italy by the grandfather Sal Valoze 50 years ago and is the family fig still growing in the main greenhouse.  The fig tree can be found happily living in many homes around the capital district (Albany NY).

The figs were very sweet and a rich taste.  Could eat a basket of them.  The fig said to be cold hardy.  It sure seems very happy at my place and it is a keeper for me.

Suggestions and comments welcome.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Richie

This fig has the shape of a Celeste but it is much darker, with dark red tinted stem and sweeter than any Celeste I have tasted.
There are quite a few strains of Celeste so this fig may have been called Mega mistakenly because of the intense taste and colour?
Hopefully someone recognizes it.

This is an old thread that states that the Mega Celeste is not a celeste or from the LSU program.

Thanks Raf!
The tree is small but I don't remember any brebas so I could take a couple of cuttings for you.
Even better, why don't you come over and do one of your air layers.
I really need to learn your magic air layering touch.

LSU tested Tiger as Giant Celeste. Mega Celeste is not an LSU fig. It is a California fig according to the information put out several years ago. Don't ask me just who that source was,but as I recall it was  a very credible source.

Thanks Brian!

Checked some posts on Black Celeste and I agree there are some similarities.
One difference include this figs deep red tint that travels all the way down the stem.

Thanks Chapman and Agrarian for clarifying for me some of the confusion around LSU Tiger and relationship to Celeste!

That would be great Raf!  Would love to see how you do your air layers.
Once the air layer is ready I can drop it off to you.
Thanks

Looks like this fig mystery is mostly solved!!!

The person I got the fig from sent me a PM saying he remembers now buying this tree at Valozes greenhouses.

The Valoze website mentions the story of this Valoze family fig brought from Italy 50 years ago on their about page;  http://valozesgreenhouse.com/about/

They call it Valoze Fig Tree.

To solve the full fig mystery still need to find out where in Italy it came from and what is the fig named there...to be continued.

I have some Celeste, Kadota and Brown Turkey that I only get ONE crop a year from because of my winter weather (Zone 7 southern part of Virginia). Would that Valoze fig grow two crops here?

Thanks Meg!
This fig is way up there on the taste scale.   My tree is going on 3 years so I don't know very much about it yet,  I was told it is grown in ground (N.Y. state) and is cold hardy.

Thanks motdaugrnds!
I didn't see any brebas last year but the tree was only 2 years old so should find out this year.  From what I was told this fig should do fine in S. Virginia.
