Good day, today I picked some figs from one fast growing tree, GM-142. Thank you George! Photos are attached. Now if you want to enlarge these photo, you're going to have to use your mouse and, "right click" then choose open in new window or tab. Sorry, the forum web picture loader has issues. Sorry...there is nothing I can do . Now back to the figs. I could have let these figs stay on another 2 or 3 days but I didn't want to wait. The figs are good and very sweet. They kinda remind me of Smith but not as sweet and rich as Smith. But as the tree matures, the figs will get much darker and sweeter. This one is definately a keeper. I'm glad to have this one in my collection. I've got more pics to post but I think I will stop posting here and create my own web page with all my photos. I'm picking between 10 and 15lbs of figs a day and some I leave on the tree for the ants and birds. I've made 10 cases of fig jam from all my figs, Fig Jam, FROG Jam, Heavenly Fig Jam, Strawberry Fig Jam, Ginger Fig Jam, Vanilla Fig Jam and my favorite...Kicked-up Fig Jam. Those of you coming to the SE Fig Fest will taste my jam and figs. Thanks again George! keep up the good work! Enjoy!GM142a.JPG GM142b.JPG GM142c.JPG GM142d.JPG GM142e.JPG cheers!

Suzie, the top of the line green fig is De La Senyora. And coming in a tight second were JH Adriatic, Vasilka Silka, Stella, and Madeliene des Deux Saisons. On a scale of one to 10, these were a 12 with De La Senyora being a 15! You have to sit down when you eat these figs in case you pass out!
Very funny Bob! If you were an ant, you would be in fig heaven! I've got plenty of figs on my trees that I have not picked yet, Atreano, Atreano Gold, MVS, Malta Black, Marva Silka, Hardy Chicago, LSU Black, Brown Turkey, Pasterilliere, LSU Gold, Piedmont, Tiger, Paradiso, Pananas Purple, Alma, Emerald Strawberry, LSU Purple, Celeste, Gino Black, Ischia Black, Tranatella, Desert King, Black Mission, La Goccia d'Oro, San Pietro, Votata, Tarantella, Weeping, O'Rourke, Tacoma Violet, Barnisotte, Barnisotte Grise, Dark Portuguese, Cartenga Negra, Peter's Honey, Maryland Brown Turkey, Improved Celeste, Sal's Corleone, Ronde de Bordeaux, Smith, LSU Tiger, Willow Street, Texas Everbearing, Italian Honey, Brunswick, Beall, Big Al, Purple Passion, Excel and a few others. The rains have stopped and we're back to 88 degree temps and glaring sun. YEA! All of my figs are trying to ripen at the same time!
I'm documenting which one split, taste good, taste bad, loves heat, hates heat, etc, etc. The critters are knocking over my large pots daily to get to the ripe figs but only on these: La Goccia d'Oro, Dark Portuguese, Cartenga Negra, Peter's Honey. The coons broke my Cartenga Negra in half and twisted my La Goccia d'Oro down to a 30 degree angle just to get to the ripe figs. The poision goes out tomorrow. I'm tired of trapping them and carting them off! Sorry. I have to admit that I learned a lot about figs this year! The older your tree is the better the fruit will taste! My big LSU Purple and LSU Gold were very sweet for the first time! And my La Goccia d'Oro and Tarantella fruited this year for the first time worth eating...both taste amazing!!!!!! The figs were tiny last year and I wasn't able to rate them. This year is a different story. The trees just needed more age in order to produce a crop of fig. The same was true with Pasterilere, and Barnisotte Grise. Both of these 2 tree gave me small little figs last year and this year KABOOM...the figs were larger and very ripe. Also my Atreano gave me a red center this year where as the previous years, the center has been amber. And the reason why I have so many that have not been picked is the wife and I went to Hilton Head last week to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and now there is an over abundance of figs every where! Before vacation, I was picking figs by the pounds twice a day.

Yes, Alan it is. That's the tree that Ray won at the raffle. It's an excellent variety. It is similar to Smith but more red skin color. Take good care of that tree Ray!!!
I also have an unknown white fig from Spain and an Unknown Black fig from Spain. I showed them to Chris. It has rained 3 times today and I had to pick some almost perfectly ripe figs. Some were a little watery but still sweet. I got Red Israel from KK last year. I picked it today. A large dark red fig.....sweet but not rich. You will here more about it next year.
The high moisture in the air got some figs splitting, but not Lyndhurst white. THis year, my favorite white fig is Lyndhurst White and White Greek RK.

Yet most highly praised figs that I have tried I have loved a lot. One variety that I love that I do not hear many people talking about is a variety called Dr. Gowaty, I actually had two figs of that variety a year that most figs weren't tasting that great because of the weather during ripening, lots of rain, way less sun than normal, those two figs were great. It's a greenish fig yet I do not care about fig color. Another great one that does great during a year with lots of rain, and not tons of sun is a variety called Dominick's, great taste.
I'm glad to hear Dr. Gowaty is on your list Alan. It is one of the top 10 fastest rooters and growers so far in my "let's grow a fig tree from a stick" experiment!! LOL~~ It gives me hope. ;-)

Dennis, I hope you don't mind me giving the tree to Alan, but at the time I was new to figs, and something inside told me he really wanted it, and would value it more than I would. He had a named variety that I really wanted and it just made sense. But now, it's almost a year later and as what usually happens, that strict 15 fig limit has gone past 40. I just received a number of Spanish figs from a good friend in Spain, and have extras. If you're interested in doing a trade, let me know. Hope you still have my email address, so we can take it off forum. I just joined this forum a few months ago, and haven't really had the chance to thank you for hosting the fig festival and showing us all a great time and I hope you guys enjoyed the watermelons. Ray

Here are a few more excellent figs..... Longue d'Aout Dalmantie Vasalika Sika Peter's Honey Don Fortiss Celeste Sicilian Black Alma Brunswick LSU Black Martin's Unknown Pananas Purple Becky, I roast some figs and drizzle some pomegranate molasses and feta cheese but very little feta. There is a trick to roasting some figs that fall apart when heat is applied to them like Atreano. Here is what I do, wash the figs, slice open and cover them with cheese cloth and let them sit on the counter for a few hours, then place them in a super hot pan or grill. Or, place them in a food dehydrator for about 8 hours. Either way works! Here is another recipe--using a sharp knife, cut a triangle in the side of a fig and remove some of the pulp. Stuff the hole with feta, wrap the whole fig in bacon hold it shut with a toothpick, and grill the fig. When the bacon is crispy and the cheese oozes out, they're ready to eat! Some figs have a cavity like Brown Turkey, Black Jack, or Texas Blue giant and once the fig is stuffed, you can place the triangle back, then wrap the fig with bacon. You get a lot more cheese that way. There is no new name for this fig. Ray, the GM-142 you won was a gift. You can give it to whomever you like! I am interested in a trade for one of your Spanish figs. I'll send you an email.
