Are there multiple types/strains of this fig? I have 2 trees that are 2+ yr old with distinctly different leaves. I know that immature trees have different leaves but these are radically different. I would appreciate picts of your Black Mission leaves with your answer.

A lot of Brown Turkeys are labeled as Black Mission. Also, Black Mission can have a wide variety of leaves styles. Black Mission tends to have some reddish tint in the leaf stems. Some pix would help.

I was told that this was black mission, it looks different then all the missions I've seen. It wasn't productive at first but now it puts out some really top notch figs, this season I will get some good pics of the fruit.

I did not post picts as I did not want to "Taint" any input. I am not sure I understand why a specific cultivar would have different leaves after maturing. IMO - All fig trees not specifically identified by DNA are truthfully "Unknown", with a lot of trust being placed on individuals that we trust to identify different trees. I accept this being the case.

Oh, I can take the pics down if you like, I've been looking at this tree more and more as it grows and looks less like the missions I've seen.

And I'm with you Danny, idk why a mature tree would be so different if they supposed to be the same cultivar. Does any of your two missions look like mine?

Here's the leaf pattern on my 2 year old Black Mission, no red tint though. I traded for this little tree last spring from a nice older lady who runs a small nursery near me and she swore it was Black Mission. I also have a small rooted cutting from a 100 year old BM but the leaves are too young to compare this year. Was able to get 2 good leaves in the pic.

@Quackmaster - Ryan, I meant that I wanted to see other member's pict first. One of my trees has leaves like yours except my tree does not have the pinkish tint. @Elfarach - Simon, I think your leaves are close to Ryan's, probably close enough to be called "same". My second "Black Mission" tree has only 3 lobed leaves which some say are also Black Mission. I hope to have figs this season which might help.

Oh, ok Danny. For the first two years I had this tree all the leaves were long narrow skinny finger type leaves, just over the last couple years the leaves started to widen out but it's always had a red tent to it, a good number of my trees have the red is tent but I have to say that this one is the most red. This is probably the best tasting fig in my yard over maltese falcon and beauty, vdb, rdb, and so on. The first two years it didn't produce then it started making a couple and since then it put out a few more then the year before, I'm hoping this season it finally let's loose and puts out a lot.

Thanks Ryan, I hope to get a good handful of figs this year. It gave me like 3 last year and they weren't that great but as we all know, the older they get the better the fruit... I do remember it having that redish tint last year and now I'm wondering if it comes later in the season when fruiting. I have 2 airlayers from my VdB and are now both in 5gal pots and are the same exact hight, one has that tint and the other doesn't, go figure...

I've noticed that with some trees, the red will come and go. I'm sure they will get better.

I bought a stick of " Black mission" 2 months ago, it had red sprout earlier, but now new sprouts are not red, It grows so slow, slowest fig tree than 5 fig trees that I planted them same time in ground. Hardy Chicago grows much faster. My side question is that, Are real " black mission" grows so slow?
