my kathleen black was really out growing the 5 gal bucket ,so i got some really good sandy loom soil i put it in a 50 gal drum i cut it in half,i dumped 5 -5gal buckets of dirt in around it and still have 4 -5" left for mulch,i did my violette de bordauex the same way, i tested the ph i am getting  6.5-7 on the scale . guess that will do if not let me know what i need to get it to ?both trees have been in the green house since i took them out of their winter dark shed,about 2 weeks ago ,they both are figging already.my desert king is next it is way outgrowing 5 gal bucket too. first pict VDB,second pict kathy black~!fig trees 4-15-16 003.JPG  fig trees 4-15-16 001.JPG

6.5 to 7 is premo ph in my book. That is where i keep mine. Add a bit of lime to round off your ph if you haven't yet.

If you cut them in half how do you have handles like that. Did you make them. If they came like that were did you get those containers

~hi, i use 50 gal plastic drums,and yes i draw the handles all is one piece. i cut everything with a sabre saw, it is easy to do you can get handles on both halves ,if you figure it out and draw it with a permanent black marker a sharpie it's called works great.~

~THANKS MEG. IT REALLY ISN'T THAT HARD,BUT I HAVE RUN SAWS MOST OF MY LIFE AND BUILT THINGS IT'S NOT TO HARD TO DO WITH A SABRE SAW OR JIG SAW WHAT EVER THEY CALL IT.~

~I ALSO FORGOT I DRILL 3/8" HOLES IN BOTTOMS FOR DRAINAGE. A LOT OF HOLES, YOU DO NEED DRAINAGE,~

Much nicer than my pots. I like the handles. I did something similar but with $8 Walmart 26gal trash cans. Just needed to be painted. I didn't want to spend too much on pots since all of my trees will be in ground in a year or so.

~YES THAT WORKS GOOD,I USE ANYTHING I DON'T HAVE SPEND A;LOT ON. DRUMS ARE CHEAP,AND I HAVE ABOUT 6 OF THEM THAT WERE GIVEN TO ME,BUT YES I WOULD USE THEM FOR POTTING,GOOD IDEA THANKS FOR SHARING~
