Hi amazing fig experts all. My friend Daisy with the big IBT growing in Cottonwood AZ zone 8 wants two more in ground trees. I have lots of figlets started from the generous sharing of members and it will be some time before they are big enough to go in ground. I spotted some really big, nice Dave Wilson Nursery fig trees at Home Depot yesterday. Of these varieties are there any that you think might do as well as the IBT here? They had: VDB Panache Peter's Honey Black Jack Kadota Thanks again for your generous attention to our future figs! Jodi N Daisy

I suspect they all will do well. I would suggest the VdB since it is so different, and it is acknowledged as a great fig. I don't have any of the others to give advice on, but the Black Jack is probably the one most like the IBT she already has, get her diversity.

Thanks Ed I was thinking of that one myself. I am so surprised by the quality of the these trees. I had ordered a few of these from Dave Wilson Nursery through the Phoenix chapter of the CRFG group in March for $20 each. The ones at Home Depot are significantly bigger at $25 each. They look really nice. Hope the figs are doing well in your neck of the woods. Best, Jodi

I know I was shocked. It really is most of the David Wilson selection that the CRFG brought in and these plants are almost twice as big for $25. I got a VdB that has 5 main branches and a dozen Breba Figs. It did feel like xmas! :-).

If it were me, I'd go for the VdB, and also definitely the Panache if your growing season is long enough and warm enough -- I've heard reports of Panache not reaching its best potential in a zone 8b/9a. If that's a concern, then the Peter's Honey as tree #2.

I bet all of those varieties would be good there but the best thing for Daisy might be to extend the season by picking out a different, really early, variety. I think you might be able to plant a baby if you build it some shade, or maybe she'd prefer to wait. I guess it depends on whether she would like them spread out for fresh eating or more condensed for faster picking and making jam. Maybe I don't understand growing figs in a virtual oven and the baby would fry no matter what, or the early and late varieties are closer together from the added heat. Something to think about anyway. Peter's Honey and Kadota are probably just a little bit earlier than BT, the only one I still have from the list is VdB so maybe someone else can say what is earliest/latest from that list if it seems important to you.

Yes I was thinking about an early variety too. It really can be an oven here for sure and cool at nite. ;-)

Of those VdB and Panache taste the best. A desert king would be a good, early fig.

Thx Vito. I have that one with some Brebas on it. I have been putting it in ground in a pot then digging it up and putting it in the garage for the winter. It's 3 now, do I still need to do that to help grow best?? Thx for the help! And I'm in zone 8 with 14' winter cold. ;-(

Those striped Panache would be a great attention getter at the Farmer's Markets she sells at.

Yes the Panache will be a looker for sure. I can't wait to see if any of these other varieties take off with the amazing vigor of her original IBT. Thanks all for your kind attention. I brought home a couple of these $25 trees. Sweetie replied that he would happily buy me $25 trees next year so that he doesn't have to live through another winter rooting hundreds of cuttings. Smart man. ;-)
