I just wanted to introduce myself. I just found this forum, and have spent hours and hours reading. I have always wanted a fig tree. One of my earliest memories is of climbing a large fig tree in my grandmothers backyard, and eating figs right off the tree.

The family just moved to the far north Houston, Texas, area. We now have enough space for a few fruit trees! The previous owners even left a good sized fig tree (variety unknown so far).

I can already see that my wish for a fig tree is soon going to become an obsession and another collection addiction. At least it seems that I will be in good company.....  :-)

I have already purchased a handful of trees from a good local nursery, and I am working on collecting some cuttings. Looking at local Texas and Louisiana varieties to get started.

PS - I also went a little crazy with planting citrus trees too, since we are in Houston.

I look forward to being able to contribute to the great forum.

Cliff

Welcome to the forum.  There are several forum members in the North Houston/Conroe/Spring area.

All of the LSU figs will do well in your area.

Welcome!

Just post some pictures of your fig tree and it's fruit and someone here will probably be able to identify it for you.

If you didn't already know it, you are living in a great fig growing area.  Many of us would also like to hear about your citrus too.

You mentioned cuttings, I know Fatansassytexan is selling some cuttings right now on Ebay, he is from that area of the state, and has great cuttings.

Don - Thanks for the recommendation. I had found Fatnsassytexan's listings on eBay last night, after reading a post here on recommended eBay sellers. I have my eye on 2 or 3 of his listings. I also saved you in my favorite eBay seller's list. I am trying not to go overboard with the cutting right now (like I always do with every new hobby that I start....).

Well, I only managed to get one set of cutting from fatnsassytexan. Not know what the normal selling price for cuttings are, and not being that eBay savvy, made it pretty difficult. I tried to win on 4 sets of cuttings....

I was AMAZED at the selling price that the Smith fig brought!

Just wanted to bump this post up to give fatnsassytexan a recommendation as an eBay seller, and a thank you! I was offered a chance to purchase cuttings from a variety that I missed in the initial auction. Also the both listing for the cuttings that I purchased stated that you were buying 4 cuttings. But, on my two orders I received 6 - 7 cuttings of each!

Thanks. The flooding here is over.... for now. But, late week before last, we had 3-4 inches of water in our garage. So my wife says. I couldn't get home from work that day due the high water. But the next day we were back to pumping water out of the garage with a wet-vac (having the wife and daughter dumping the buckets).

Beside the water damage, all the rain and water is drowning the young citrus trees that I planted a couple of months ago.
