This was one of the first ripening figs this season for me, along with desert king. It did have a head start to the season which probably explains its early ripening. I think it is Longue d' Aout, or at least related to it. The leaves match LdA, and the fruit is large and tear drop shaped. It was exceptionally sweet and rich. It was given to me from a forum member last year and originates in the Abruzzo region of Italy. I am looking forward to many more this season as the tree is loaded with figs. Thanks for looking.

Thanks. It was really sweet and rich. It did have a berry note to it. You're right, Richie, it was really thick and jammy. My daughter really liked it, too. I had one a few weeks ago that was really a different shape than the rest of the other Unk Pellegrino. I'm not sure why it had a more round shape. It wasn't quite ripe, either. Here's that pic...

Hi Bill, I have the same plant but has not fruited yet. It went to a 5 gallon bucket a month ago. I have a Longue d Aout also, I'll have to compare them. It is supposed to be a very large, very good fig, congrats. Our friend with the Pellegrino passed along a Terramo to me. I am already starting a cutting from it. Thank you! Mike

Mike,
You won't be disappointed with Unk Teramo. I found that one a few years ago and it is very tasty and hardy. The Unk Pellegrino is a very vigorous grower for me. I guess if it is already in a five gallon pot, it must be for you as well!

My Pelligrino leaves and Brebas, dosen't look like an LDA. Produces huge figs bigger than an average apple.

Interesting. The one I have is labeled as an unknown Pellegrino-as far as I know. The fruits look only slightly similar, but you are certainly right about the leaves. Most of the leaves on mine are the standard "ruffle-y" LdA with a few finger like leaves as well. I'll have to take a pic of the leaves tomorrow morning.

Hi Vinny, Talked to my brother about this interesting variety and he said... that these brebas are similar to a good quality fig grown in the North of Portugal , moderately cold hardy with the popular name of 'caralheto' (given its shape) and sold on many nurseries of the region ( like Viv. Valter for instance) . Long time ago, found its way to Italy where it got a new name - Lungo del Portogallo - Along the years , throughout Italy it was named - Grosso - Portoghese - San Piero - Buzzone Nero - and for sure many other names.... until a gentleman got to see and taste this fruit, and decided to bring a few sticks home.... having lost his notes and forgetting completely the name of the plant (!) , and from where he had got it took a wise decision of code name it - I-395 - In between ,this globe trotter fig went skiing in the Alps and for some reason decided to add to its collection another name - Peretta - Traveling this much I agree that it may as well be called a dedicated Pellegrino Francisco Portugal

Here is a pic of the leaves of the Unk. Pelligrino. Thanks for the link, Vinny. We definitely have the same source ( or lineage). The first two pics are of the immature fruit and the leaves of Unk Pelligrino, respectively. The next two pics are the immature fruit and the leaves of my LdA from trees of joy nursery. The last pic is my first Unk Pelligrino fruit- not exactly ripened, but pecked by birds enough to pick. I wrote that the flavor was melon like. This is only my first year with it, but I'm very pleased!

Francisco,
Thank you for the information. I should've included unknown (UK) with Pelligrino. The name was suggested by another forum member as he acquired similar variety from a man called Pellegrino. I started calling mine Pelligrino with an "I" lol . I can send you some cuttings in fall .
Bill,
Thanks , my tree is very old and not sure if we both have identical strain. I'm happy to send you some cuttings in fall if you would like.

Big not so Bad Bill, glad to ear you are happy with the Pellegrino, it will get better as it grows, how's #2 doing ? You will like that one also I'm hoping to identify that one before I give it a UNK name. Hope #165 Rio UNK survived for you also, not a big fig but very unique and dear to me, I salvaged that one from my great grandfathe's water mill that was destroyed by a flash flod of the river Rio back in 1928 in Italy, Good luck
Kkk2210, Vinny I will be sending you my Pellegrino this fall and you be able to compare the two side by side , and I'll send the Callara from Paolo also. Nice to have you on this forum.

Vinny, Thanks for commenting .Am told that in the correct environment makes delicious brebas. My only tree is potted, rooted late, 2 years ago and got it from Italy (Tatyana).. did not produce yet any brebas but I hope to taste a couple of main crop figs later in the season. That's very kind of you offering those cuttings . I accept and suggest, if that is OK with you, to cut them at a convenient time by year end. Tell me also what can I do for you.. from here. Francisco

Hello Vinny, Thanks for the pictures of your Pelligrino. I receive some fig cuttings from my Italian neighbor, 5 years ago. With the help of your pictures I just find out it's not a Pelligrino I grow all this time. Little disappointed!. I'm a big fan of yellowish green variety, so I happy to grow it in my garden. I'm interesting about the Pelligrino fig, do you sale your cutting? James

Hi Bill. I have the same figs from the same source. The Pellegrino is a different fig which appears to be rounder than the Logue d' Aout. The #2 fig Mario referred to is the Longue d' Aout so you can check the differences. Taste did seem similar, great, sweet and juicy. We had tried and compared the two. We also verified the Longue d' Aout to mine which was separately sourced. I would not doubt the possibility of being related, but different. Two more great figs for certain. Mike

I am amazed at how big the fruit is for that variety. Clicking on the eBay link shows that the listed has been removed. Is there anymore cuttings for sale or do you know of another reliable source that you'd recommend to source the Unk Pelligrino ?
