I've had Dall' Osso for 2 seasons now.   It was gifted to me at 1 or 2 years old so it's probably 3 or 4.  It's about 4' tall from the soil.  She has the best spot in the yard and is in full sun all day long.  Have not tasted it.  Seems to be a very slow grower.  She put some fruit on last year that dropped after it moved to my yard.  The fruit that I observed last year was main crop and had no characteristics similar to that of drawing by Giorgio Gallesio.  The only observation that I could make from last year is that the leaves were shiny, almost glossy.

This year the leaves are shiny/glossy again.  The breba crop from this year did surprise me with some odd looking characteristics.  The first fig that she put on looked a little different to me.  This picture is from 05/29:

IMG_5034.jpg

And on 06/24 it looked like this:

IMG_5203.jpg IMG_5218.jpg

And again on 06/28:

IMG_5456.jpg

There's an apparent 'two-tone' appearance.  About 2 weeks later the fig dropped off naturally.  Cut it open and it was bone dry.  Only one cavity.  The other breba developed into this:

IMG_5207.jpg IMG_5210.jpg

This was the prominent leaf shape until recently where it has developed 5-lobed leaves that are less shiny/glossy:

IMG_5219.jpg IMG_5221.jpg

The main crop has no irregular characteristics.  This is what it looks like today:

A unique fig, congrats!
As I was reading your story, I thought, man, that fig needs to be pollinated !
But I am not sure about that . Maybe with a wasp it will have a different shape and color?

Hey Danny

I was able to discuss Dall'Osso with an expert on my recent trip to Italy, Gallesio's two-tone genuine Dall'Osso has been lost. So all other comers should not even be called Dall'Osso in my view. I find it surprising that people in this community have simply allowed this liberal naming policy on this cultivar when, if it was another fig, the purists would be up in arms. But whatever. The statistical occurence of grotesque fruit in the fake Dall'Osso should be about 10% of total and up to 30% in the real one, according to Mr. Rocco.

What's up Rafael?  Glad you're back safely.  Enjoyed reading your Facebook posts from Italy.

This was originally posted in another thread regarding selling Dall' Osso on eBay.  Felt it was the wrong place for it and moved it here.  Deleted the original post on the Dall' Osso eBay thread.

Don't know if Dall' Osso really exists or not.  Simply reporting on what I'm growing.  The tree was gifted to me and the person that gifted it felt that it was real.  It did produce a strange breba crop and is proving itself worthy as a novelty if anything.  In any event, the kids and I enjoy crowding around her and admiring the irregular fruit.

I did some searching last year and came up with this.  From Paolo Belloni's I Giardini di Pomona in 2011:

pdf giardini_pomona_luago11.pdf

You can do a better job than Google Translate but the section on Dall' Osso Google translates into:

Fico Fetifero (or bone)
This cool two-tone original
Southern Piedmont-high Liguria,
It has the characteristic of lead
a fetus inside the syconium,
from which the name fetifero or bone.
The second denomination
derives from the fact that the enlargement
the "fetus" compresses
achenes content in the pulp in
proximity dell'ostiolo condensing them
in a kind of agglomeration
that, during the tasting,
It can give the feeling
the presence of a bone.
The cultivar was thought disappearance
when incredibly, autumn
1995, showing the
reproduction of the table of the
Pomona Italian where the fruit
was represented, during a
exhibition organized Pomological
Pomona non-profit organization for the FAI
(Italian Environment Fund)
in the Castello della Manta (CN),
a barber in a neighboring country
He signaled a plant of the above
variety, recovered by the
the following spring.
The fig Fetifero in
Conservatory, is located in the company
variety of other historical
described by Gallesio, such as the
fig Albo, the brogiotto, the
Dear, the Monaco, Paradise,
the Pissalutto, Portuguese,
Troiano, the White Queen and the
Regina black, Verdone and finally
the dottato (the oldest of Optatus
Romans: the fig "choosing" between
all) that to date is the cultivar
most cultivated both for the fruit
BIODIVERSITY 2
fresh or for drying.

If Paolo is the author, (I think) he's stating that Fetifero was discovered again and presented at a fruit exhibition in 1995.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Danny

Yes Paolo may have the real thing, for something 20 years ago its odd not to have certainty, and I have yet to see a two-tone fruit pictured on a recent date. The real fake comes from Belfiore Vivai in Florence and many people have that one. Don't know which one you have, or anyone else, but I am pretty sure some of those being sold on ebay are the Belfiore faker. I guess if Olya got hers from Paolo it might be real, but have we seen 2-tone fruit pics? Its a lot of money people pay for something so uncertain. And the production is so irregular. Something is wrong in figville. But yours was a gift and ain't nothing wrong with growing a gift.

About a month ago I reported on my Dall' Osso breba having a two-toned appearance.  Fertilizing today and found this:

IMG_5771.JPG

Now that's a beautiful two-toned fig!  It's the same one from the first post.  Can't wait to see what this turns into!  Here is the other with the strange looking eye:

IMG_5775.JPG

Very interested to see the inside of this one.  And here's some of the other fruit with no irregularities.  You can see the two-toned fruit between the lobes of the leaf on the bottom.

A squirrel took the last irregular fig and mashed it into oblivion, organza bag and all! This is the one that I most wanted to see the inside. Was getting huge and round like a handball. Almost black in color. Was going to pick this morning. :(

Lots of other figs with no irregularities ripening now.

The heat really ramped up the ripening the past few days.  There's still a lot of fruit on the tree but here's 3 ripe Dall' Osso that were picked and eaten tonight.

IMG_6125.jpg IMG_6127 (1).jpg

It is a nice, 'meaty' fig.  Light on the sweetness and not too much figgy flavor.  Good texture and juicy.  Thin skin.  Very happy with it.

I found a solution to the digging in the pots that has worked well for me this year. I bought a giant container of cayenne pepper at bjs and sprinkle it liberally onto the soil I kept sprinkling after rainstorms for a week or two and they stopped. This issue is usually worst for me in the spring and fall.

Hello everyone!  The season has wound down here in NYC.  VdS, I258 and CdDG are still producing very sparingly and will all but end very shortly.  Haven't had much time for updates (saving everything for the winter) but I wanted to update this thread on our Dall' Osso.  This variety gets high grades from us all around except for growth rate which is excruciatingly slow.  It was the earliest variety in the backyard orchard for both crops this season and it has been very productive (That's a real winner here in NYC by any standard).  The quality of fruit is outstanding.  Main crop very sweet and the kids are loving it.  It produced some deformed fruit but nothing two-toned like last season.  Can't wait to see what it does next year.  Added link to the slideshow.  Enjoy the pics.

@nycfig .... Truly a beautiful looking fig.... I hadn't been actively looking for one the last few months although I did bid (and miss) on a recent eBay offering from a known source not too long ago. Will have to up this variety in my priority list as it really has all the attributes that I admire in a fig... Congrats on a beautiful fig!

Thank, Danny.... The deer was taken on public land 3 years ago in Ellenville, NY. Green scored 146... last year, hunted an even bigger one on same public land but the season ended with him still romping through the woods... haven't seen him during bow but looking forward to the firearms opener in a few weeks... To keep the conversation on topic, planning on venison tenderloin ala Diane with chocolate lava cake and fresh fig coulis FOR dessert...   :-)
