Hey everyone TONYSAC here just wanted to share my freebies of the day so I was cruising along on craigslist and someone put up an add it said I'm trimming my tree today its a black mission and is a vigorous tree there's bundles take one take two but do not un bundle them that was at like 4:20 so I read it by 4:40 so I hopped in my truck set the gps and off I went for my 40 min drive. He trimmed his tree alright I didn't want to be greedy so I only took one bunch brought it home clean them all up cut them into nice pieces soaked all the cuttings in water for about a half hour  and the pictures tell the rest ill call it my little fig science experiment I wanted to find something like this exactly I have a park called valley stream state park and when I get a chance I'm going to walk the trails and plant these little baby's. Two of them I stuck right into the dirt one with leaves one without two nice branches I put in 100% mulch with drain holes (freebie thank you town) and I put all the cuttings in one (free Ralph's ) 2.5 gallon bucket with 100% perlite with drain holes in the bottom and a bag secured around the top (greenhouse).....Everything was free mulch cuttings and buckets... Oh yeah I almost forgot the one in the yellow bucket had roots it was a sucker a big sucker he's planted in 50/50 mix potting soil and perlite...PS the ones in the white buckets filled with mulch aren't seperate pieces that's one whole branch in each bucket you just can see it cause its below the mulch and those green stems are very stiff and healthy unlike some of the others that's why I left them whole like that it would make a great starter tree everything already had figs I had to take them off they where little though .

Johhny Appleseed ...yeah I kinda like that BLB.   Jo-Ann I'm glad I gave you a laugh :)   I'm one of those people always looking for that allusive fig tree in the wild its like fig sonar or something I can be doing 50 mph and I see one out of the corner of my eye but I haven't found a wild one yet but now ill know just where they are I'm going to put them in all the sumps (rain water run off) and parks that I can possibly find from hear to my dads. There's creeks all over in a town called Franklin square they will never have to worry about water it will be close by for them to find. PS Jo-Ann glad to hear you finally got your cuttings.

Congratulations.  Long Island will be a better place because of you.  You might want to plant them next to the creek but not in it.

Tony, I could just picture you cruising along Southern State Pkwy or Sunrise checking things out then slamming on the breaks and yelling -  FIG!!!  Jump out of the car with a pair of clippers and a bucket of perlite.

I grew up on a street that was a large double hill - go up the hill have a straight away for 1/4 mile or so then up again.  We lived on the straight away and there is a sump on the top of the second hill.  Whenever there is a large rain storm somehow the sump has some kind of overflow pipe (I guess like a bathroom sink) and it is like a river coming down the street complete with ---- Gold fish!  Apparently someone let a bunch of Gold fish into the sump back in the 60's and they have been there ever since. NO one believes it until they see it.  Sometimes they are still alive, we would put them in a coffee can and bring release them in a nearby duck pond.

Thanks for the reminder about sumps!

Its nice to know someone knows what a sump is and Jo-Ann you couldn't be any closer to the truth there is not a time that i'm on the meadowbrook /ss / seafod etc that I am not looking for a tree even when I was working in westchester taking the hutch I would look its crazy how we ALL think just for a fruit. That's a great story about the goldfish we have fish in ours to. And Bob no way in the creek i'm actually going to dig test holes first to find out how far down the ground water is before I put them in the ground.

Yes, that would definitely be interesting to find out... How did all that planting pan out?  I know the area involved, there were many a night during my college years, where i spent my time fishing under the Meadowbrook Parkway and Wantagh Parkway bridges for Tiderunner size weakfish as well as cruising to Jones Beach and hitting the local bars... Good memories....
