@tyro : Paul... Beautiful Dragon fruit.... I had no idea what the plants the fruit grows on looked like or the variety available before your post! I usually buy my Dragon Fruit down in the China Town area of NYC because they always have the best and freshest.. Thank you for sharing your pics! Tony

You eat it fresh/raw. No need for bread. The seeds give it a nice crunch but are not sticky. Dragonfruits I've eaten are very juicy and refreshingly sweet but not to the level of watermelons.

@JD,it's whats for dessert,no bread required.<G> @Tony,it's really quite a treat to wander around that 1/2 acre he's planted out. Some of those fruits are best approached with caution, see photo six and below. Others are far more approachable. @Dan,Edgar's been crossing these guy's for many years.I don't think he knows how many varieties he has back there.I tried 7-8 varieties and took notes for the first four, after that I lost discipline and just gobbled what ever was presented. Jorge....very pleasant, delicate flavor, much better than store bought. Edgar....this had the most acid so was bolder in flavor. Tricia...No acid, very sweet.(named after his daughter,<G>) Asunda..light and delicate with a dash of cinnamon. @Ben,beyond amazing. His property is basically a low, triple canopy food forest.More thicket than forest. Tomorrow,UCD will be hosting an all day event at 2 locations in Santa Paula that is open to the Public,Cost is $40.00 at the door.Free cuttings, lunch, fruit and pitahaya ice cream. 2016 Pitahaya/Dragon Fruit Field Day Friday - September 16, 2016 Registration 7 a.m. – 8 a.m. at MVP Farms MVP Farms - Off Highway 126, Fillmore, CA 3095 West Telegraph Road, Fillmore, CA 93015, and Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center - Santa Paula, CA 14292 West Telegraph Road, Santa Paula, CA 93060

Nice looking fruit, Tyro! I have Edgar? plant. I have a hard time with large plants since my growing space is so very limited. Otherwise, I would love to take a Tricia plant. It's a very different fruit, that's for sure!
