I received these ebay cuttings today, spent 3 days in mail, wrapped in a sealed baggie. What are the white bumps, good stuff or bad? I would have washed with dilute clorox, wrapped tops in parafilm and put in moist potting soil to root. But if these are initials will cleaning remove the one and only shot of roots forming at the bump locations?  What would you suggest I do for best chances of getting these to root? 101_3809 (800x600).jpg

Those are very nice root initials, Cuttings look very good, good stuff.   green cuttings are easier to rot, Hope someone tell you a good system for tight moisture control but not super wet.

Thanks all for the inputs. I think I'm going to try half in water and half in moist potting soil with parafilm wrap on exposed tops.

I expect the greatest hazard will be me "helping" them too much :-)

Sorry, guys.  Those are lenticels.  They appear in low oxygen environments and help the plant do a better job of extracting oxygen from the environment.  Sometimes root initials will poke through the center of the lenticels, especially the fluffy ones, but that may or may not happen.

Search on lenticel to see some other examples.

+1 for what rcantor says.
Rooting might occur, but then you'll need to keep them growing through the winter.
Those are green cuttings and you can't put them to sleep or they'll die IMO .
I hope you planned everything for the winter ( grow light,heat ... )
Did you know that you'd be getting only green cuttings and no hardened wood ?
Well, to be honest, this time of the year is not the best for the lazy rooters. But with good cares, you can root them and get trees out of them !

With green cuttings, I'd try 3 weeks in water changing water every other day and then in loam in pots.

Yes I heard from another trusted source that those were "lenticels" (new word for me :-).

Makes sense that they are not initials as they were only cut from the tree 3 days b4 pic taken.

JDS: I did not know they would be so green, got them for about $3 each so not a big investment. I need some practice in rooting as my previous attempts failed so that's part of why I'm starting them now. Plus it's more fun and much cheaper than golf ;-)
