The leaves and fruit of these two varieties are extremely close.  I've only had fruit from the Nordland - the Slocan is bearing for the first time this year.  Has anyone seen any differences between the two?

Note on the fruit that one has the stem as part of the body, the other has the stem and body separate. Is this always the case between the two?

They sure looks similar. Looks like we may have solve an id issue like:

Longue d'Aout = Slocan = Norland = Melazanna Merdoscola

I have all 4. Exception is Norland. It's in its 1st season hence hard to tell but judging from Fignut pic's, they do look alike. Good eagle eye Fignut.

Hey Jason. That's a good catch on your part! You may be on to something.

If that difference you noticed is constant on each respective tree, that would be enough to indicate a genetic difference at least.

Are there enough fruits on both trees to see if the difference Jason noticed is consistent on each tree?

The neck length varies on the same tree.  I assume it's the same mechanism that produces different shaped leaves on a tree - fast growth produces more leaf definition (and longer necks?).  Actually brebas, which grow quickly, tend to have longer necks than main crop figs.  If you look closely at the picture of the Nordland branch, the bottom fig has a long neck and short stem, and by the time you get to the top fig on the branch the neck is shorter, and the stem longer.

I haven't gotten any figs from the Slocan yet, so I can't say that they are the same fig at this point.  But they are very similar and should be compared.

Yes indeed.....faster fig growth produces longer fig stems too. I have some RDB figs that have stems that are about one inch long......from their fast growth rate.

Check more leaves. The Nordland in the OP has 9 primary veins coming off of the stem. The Slocan only has 7. Is that consistent with the rest of the leaves?

Hi,
I'm surprised to see that nordland = Longue d'aout.
But looking at your photos I can certainly agree. They both resemble my "longue d'aout", leaves and fruits.
I just took the winter protection out of my "longue d'aout"; So far so good ...
But I'm hoping it will grow better this year. If not, I'll dig it up, and replace it with a new "longue d'aout" tree, and planting it in a 80Liter trashcan.
I left the ground untouched for that tree, and since my ground is clay, that might be the problem I have with that tree.
IMO, the figs from "longue d'aout" are really good. But bad point, last year - perhaps due to the cold spring - the tree dropped his two figs ... That was a big deception ...

I'm having a tough time picturing the LD being same as Nordland.
I have all three. Nordland, Melanzana Merdascola and Nordland. I will agree the LD and MM are the same, but not the Nordland. That's not to say I will not try to a compare test this coming season to see for myself.

I would like to try nordland again. I had one and it was said to be cold hardy but it died when many others didn't.
