thank you to all who has been asking about my status. i'm doing better. was in coma twice this year, but pulled through. special thanks goes to ottawan :) now to business.. i don't have any fig trees any more. while i was sick, they were neglected and they all died. there were some extremely good fig, and rather rare ones, not as rare as some of the members collection, but they are no longer living. my fig trees were my pride and joy as some of you might have remembered.. to those i shared cuttings, i would like to ask for favor, providing the cuttings have grown into trees now. i'm looking cor following. 1. Paradiso Gene 2. Kathleen's Black 3. Niagara Black 4. Ronde de Bordeaux 5. VdB Paradise Nursery please let me know if the cuttings can be shared. as always, once grown, any cutting will be shared freely. pete

Pete, I can also provide you with Niagra Black cuttings this Fall - just let me know. Glad to see you are back! I had a large in-ground Paradiso Gene but moved and left it at my old place. I did bring cuttings which resulted in one new plant; however, it is too young for cuttings this Fall. I imagine someone will come through with PG though.

I don't see Hardy Chicago on your list. You need a Hardy Chicago, don't cha? What fig collection would be complete with a Hardy Chicago? I happen to have a cutting or two of Hardy Chicago. Are you interested?

thanks all for the generous offers. this time, i'm going to put the trees in the ground. space is limited, that's why those 5. they were the best tasting to me while i was growing them. they are few others, CdD and so on, but they don't produce as much as 5 i listed. i might hit USDA/UCD to see if they still send out cuttings. again, i'm grateful for all the offers! thans all!

Pete, Glad you are back. Have missed your posts. Very sorry about your collection. I don't have anything on your list to share but can say that everything I have in the Mt. Etna family seems to do very well in ground in our zone and seems to be very tolerant of being ignored for periods of time. Best wishes for good rooting and fast growth.

Pete, it appears that UCD no longer does cuttings. And generally anything you need you can get from one of us, realistically! And I would echo the suggestion for some Mt Etna variety - HC, Sal's, Takoma Violet etc, because of their reliability in fruiting after bad winters and their overall quality and productivity.

for whatever reason, i never had a luck with mt. etna verities.. had 'em all and they never did well. might be due to container culture and intense nc heat..

Lived in zone 5 for a few years n veer could get a Chicago Hardy to live through the winter. So for me didn't live up to the name. You would think a fig called Chicago should live through the weather in Chicago.

mike I grow all my figs in zone 6b unprotected every year just to see what I can still get a crop from. I had a hardy Chicago strain from hirts that did amazing until we had that bad winter a few years ago. the strain of MvsB that I got from a member years ago 3 of my four cuttings rooted and found a home in my hedge. I get loads of rip figs off of them every year. although that year we didn't seem to have a summer I had few but did still get some.

Dave I was living 60 miles south of Chicago. Which I guess was too far north for Hardy Chicago. I had bogught at Lowes. Would grow like crazy in Summer. Then winter would kill it all the way to the ground. I guess t didn't like -30 temps.

hi coop! hope everything is well. i might ask for some cuttings of Kathleen's Black. i think not many are keeping it since it's hard to put figs on. i'm telling you, pinch it and it will put them on like crazy. it's one of those figs that takes time to mature. but once about 3rd yr of putting on the figs, it will be a nice surprise :)
