I have several figs in ground and they have grown to about waist high and really healthy. What do I need to do to take them through winter? This is their first year. I also have a fig tree bought at lowe's and I'm pretty certain it is a couple maybe years old and at present has several figs. How do I winter it and it is also in ground. __________________ Zone 8b Temple, Tx Kadota, Brown Turkey, Celesta, Chicago Hardy, LSU purple, Black Mission, Violette De Bordeaux, Texas Everbearing. I want enough figs to eat a fig each day.

The first year, I tried covering my trees with foam pipe insulation, but still had some damaged branch tips. Covering around the base with about 6" of Texas hardwood mulch will probably do it. They sell them at Home Depot for $3.37 per bag. Nowadays I don't protect any of my trees included the potted ones. They all stay outside.
