Building a collection can get expensive, and rooting cuttings can be stressful and frustrating, so I'd like to make a special offer to members: I have enough greenhouse space to grow thousands of fig trees over the next 6 months, and I will grow you well-rooted trees of any variety you want for $7 each.
These $7 trees will be around 6-12" tall and will be shipped bare-root. Shipping charge is $15 per box, up to 5 trees per box, so the overall shipping rates will look like this:# of trees Shipping 1-5 $15 6-10 $30 11-15 $45 16-20 $60 21-25 $75 etc..
PayPal's programming doesn't allow me to add more than 5 gradations of shipping charge, so it defaults to $75 for everything over 25 trees. So if you're wanting to order more than 25 trees, please do it with multiple orders and place a max of 25 trees in each order. For example, if you want to order 40 trees, place one order for 25 trees and another order for 15 trees. So what's the catch? Well, if there's a 'catch', it's that you can't get the trees right away, because I'll have to grow them out for you. You'll receive your trees in the spring or summer, depending on how many I need to propagate. I anticipate that most orders will be shipped around July 1st, though some of the smaller/simpler orders will probably go out earlier. If any of the trees you order aren’t ready by July, perhaps because of slow growth or excessive demand, I’ll ship the ones that are ready and give you the choice to either get a refund on the others or to wait and receive them whenever they're ready.
Why don't I grow them out first and then sell them? Because if I did, I wouldn't sell them for $7, I'd sell them for a price closer to their market value (i.e. for much more $$). This is a special offer to sell you trees for little more than it costs me to produce them, but only if you pre-pay to cover those expenses. Doing things this way allows me to know how many of each variety I need to grow, and it gives me the money in advance to cover the costs of growing them.
So what's in it for me? A large part of the cost of growing the fig trees will be heating my 4 greenhouses, where I also grow lots of fish and bananas. Heating is really expensive, so I usually only heat half my space, and I only heat it a minimal amount. But I would crank up the heat for your fig trees, and that would have the side benefits of making my fish and bananas happier and helping them to grow faster. So in a nutshell, in exchange for hooking you up with cheap trees, you’d help to pay my heating bill and allow me to grow bigger fish and bananas. Everybody wins :)
So the offer is out there: If you're willing to wait until this upcoming spring/summer to receive your trees, then I will grow you whatever you want for $7 per tree.
Orders will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Getting your order in early puts you at the front of the line and maximizes the odds that you'll receive your trees early in the season.
Many of these varieties are new additions this winter, and while they all came from reputable sources, it should be noted that I haven't personally fruited them yet.
You can view the listings and place your orders at http://www.figcuttings.com/p/fig-trees-for-sale.html Happy hunting!EDIT -- I changed the shipping rates a bit, updated rates are below. The updated rates are also located at the top of the order pages on my site. Orders placed with the old rates will be honored at those old prices, but new and add-on orders will have these new rates: # of trees Shipping 1-3 $15 4-6 $25 7-16 $45 17-25 $70 25-50* $140 *Max 50 trees per order. To get more than 50 trees, please place multiple orders.

Hello GreenFin. Interesting concept. Love the convenience aspect of it. So, first we pay for cuttings which is $7 each and when they are ready to be shipped we pay for shipping? or we pay all together when they are ready to be shipped? Can you clarify the paying steps please. Thanks.

If you visit his link. You can add the fig trees you wish to order. The shopping cart will automatically add the shipping costs to your order.

I did that but with each cutting it's also trying to charge 15 for shipping. Thant's not what GreenFin is explaining. With what I understand from his post , each tree should cost $10 including the shipping. Am I right?

Hi Frank, You're not buying cuttings, you're buying 6-12" tall trees. You pay for the trees in advance (when you order), I propagate them over the winter, and ship them to you in the spring/summer when they're ready. The downside is that you pay now and have to wait until spring/summer to receive them. The upside is that you get them cheap and save a ton of money.

You're not quite right. Shipping is $15 per BOX, and I can put up to 5 trees in each box. If you get from 1 to 5 trees, I can fit them all in 1 box, so you're total shipping charge will be $15. But if you get 6 trees, I'll have to use 2 boxes, and that would raise the shipping to $30. So the total shipping charges look like this: 1 tree - $15 2 trees - $15 3 trees - $15 4 trees - $15 5 trees - $15 6 trees - $30 7 trees - $30 8 trees - $30 9 trees - $30 10 trees - $30 11 trees - $45 12 trees - $45 etc

I think it's a great deal. My question was on shipping part. The cart system is trying to charge 15 per tree. What happens if I want to order 5 trees? You say it's 15 per box and in each box you can fit 5 trees, correct? The system is trying to charge 5x15 for shipping. OK, it's working. 30 shipping for 10 orders. not bad. thanks.

As I see it, Frank still needs his question answered so he can pay correctly. He isn't questioning what he's ordering (cuttings vs trees), he's saying what the rest of us are thinking: Pay for trees ONLY now @ $7.00 each or pay for trees PLUS total shipping NOW. In response to another post, $22.00 (not $10.00) would be the MINIMUM cost for 1-tree as shipping is clearly listed as $15.00 for 1-5 trees. Is this correct?

Greenfin, seems like a great idea. I only have a couple questions. Is shipping $15 per tree? If so that's not that bad, but maybe make that clear up top. Second question is, how come your wish list has a bunch of the ones you are selling? :)

It' won't charge per tree. I just placed an order. The shopping cart automatically updates your costs based on the quantity you purchase.1 to 5 trees = $15 6 to 10 trees = $30 11 to 15 trees = $45 etc

OK, I ordered 10 trees for now. For which the shipping is $30. that makes the tree $7 ea + $3 shipping per tree (15/5=3) which equals to $10 per tree. No?

Most of them are going to be growing in 1-gallon trade pots at shipping time. The smallest ones I'll ship need to be at least around a 4" container size with well-developed roots.

Wow. This is a great offer. I'm wondering though... how will you get the trees into dormancy for bare-root shipping? You will have to do that right?

Figs can travel with leaves and minimum semi dry soil. GreenFin, forgive my curiosity, I just checked your profile and your WISH LIST confused me a little. In The FigCuttings.com website you claim to have 150+ varieties and thus being able to propagate them for us. My question is: why are many varieties , which you are claiming to be able to propagate for us, still in your WISH LIST. Pardon my curiosity but can't help to wonder where my fig trees going to come from and where is my money going exactly if not to you. :) Or, have you not updated your profile for few years?

I haven't updated my wish list lately. All of the varieties listed are growing here or are already on their way. On a related note, though, I am open to taking requests. So if anybody wants me to propagate something that isn't listed, post the varieties you want in this thread, and I'll see about adding them. For most common varieties, I should be able to track them down and buy some wood or plants to propagate with.

I won't put them into dormancy, they'll still be actively growing. They should be fine, I've sent some like this before without problems. I put them in bags to keep them moist, and ship them in a box for sturdy protection.

I would definitely want to know the sources of each fig variety I am adding to my collection. All my figs are carefully cataloged and tagged. It can be messy if not done so. Is there a chance you can do that for us GreenFin? If not in public (in the forum) at least in PM? This is very important stem to me and I assume to many of us fig collectors. This is a very important step that I have been taught by founders of LosAngelesFigForest project. I'll have to thank them for it, one day.

Sure. I won't post their names publicly, but I can pm that info to you. I did the same thing for some other members when I offered the $2 cuttings earlier in the fall.

Hi GreenFin, Thank you for this offer! I bought cuttings from you in November (thank you again for making those available for us! they were extremely well packaged and healthy!) and am looking at this list you are offering for the fig trees. There are so many varieties that I want! However, by July temps here are typically >110 F. And while a fig tree in soil would survive shipping, and bareroot fig tree, sitting in a hot post office vehicle, sitting on a hot porch, etc. waiting for transplant would probably die in my environment. So my question is, would you be willing to sell some of the cuttings now that you would be turning into rooted trees? I would pay the same price for some of the cuttings now that you would be selling the finished trees for. It would just be safer for my environment. Thanks again!

This is a great deal for people! I'm recommending that people check importing regulations in their state. I'm 100% sure you can't ship to California for sure without a phytosanitary certificate. Please be careful and thanks again for the offer.

The other big thing to consider is there will be 0 buyer protection through PayPal. Their limits are typically 45 days although their docs say up to 180 days of purchase so 6 months. These aren't slated to ship until month 7. I appreciate the deal, I put in a small order, but just wanted people to understand how the TOS with PayPal could effect this if something were to go awry.

Well, the way I feel is that this is a small amount of money for James to ruin a forever reputation over so I placed a small order, I always deal with an amount of money that would not hurt my pocketbook and sanity. I always used the philosophy that when lending money and buying things that I can live without will be the amount that will not change my life if I do not get the money paid back or I get scammed. I could be wrong, have been before, but I feel pretty good with the amount of money that I invested. We will see, maybe some individual updates on the progress might help us feel more secure. I can't imagine why his posts got deleted on ourfigs, it can't be for selling because I see a lot of selling there, they just had a huge cutting sale which looked pretty darn nice.

Waynea - i edited my posts #25 because I changed from fico preto to smith in my order. Aren't fico preto and black madeira the same? I edited #28 because I thought better of what I said. I'm sorry if my posts came across as negative. Not my intention. I'm totally in favor of this. I believe in Community Supported Agriculture, and I'm sure that GreenFin will either deliver the trees as promised. If something happens, I'm confident that GreenFin will make sure everybody is taken care of in the end. I don't personally know GreenFin, but I'm willing to take a chance.

^^ Same with my post, I didnt want it to come across as negative, it was merely pointing out Paypals policies. I too weighed the risks and decided that it was a small amount of money and likely not something worth risking a community reputation over so I did place a small order as well. I just know a lot of people assume they are protected by Paypal transactions, this is a different sort since its over such a longer period of time.

The only concern I have about this is what if people just order the same 5-6 varieties. Black maderia, Figo preto, Col De Dame blank, Gris, noir, and I258.
I know you said you will find a way to get cuttings. But I have not seen any of those varieties I listed go for less than $7 each.
Worried you going to be overwhelmed trying to get 200 of each of 10 varieties growing.

First, Thanks for the fantastic offer; I am wondering about the request for the varieties requested also; but my main concern is the shipping, Can we go back to that, " I put them in bags to keep them moist, and ship them in a box for sturdy protection." Could I be able to get moist potting mix around the roots of my selections? Its get incredibly hot and dry here in the desert SW, I would be willing to pay extra if need be, Thanks,,,,

We should all be thanking him, instead of worried how he is going to do it.....I pay a lot more for cuttings than what he is going to ship a small tree to me! Come' on y'all, this is the same Man that sold us $2 cuttings earlier this year! : )

Thanks Scott for the explanation, makes sense. I am sure that James will come through for us, my only regret is that I only ordered 10.

My concern is bare rooting non-dormant trees and shipping in the summer. I would love to hear from someone who has done that successfully...

Finally some sanity prevails in the world of figs . This is what the market can do if allowed to work . We in Canada have a nursery in quebec (brugmansia quebec) that has been selling great fig tree varieties from $15 Canadian for years now . Finally you can get reasonably priced trees in the US. Those prices on E-bay are a joke , people being pitted against each other to drive the price up , like cuttings don't grow on trees you know. Well for those of you that thought you had the market cornered on selling cuttings , you just got a rude awakening . All the power to you James . I don't know James , but hope this works out well for everyone involved . "There is enough in the world for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed " ... Frank Buchman John
