This year I left all the breba on my Bronze Paradiso on the plant big mistake as the majority dropped just before ripening and main crop was delayed by 6 to 8 weeks, Main crop just started forming last week wont be eating any Main crop figs this season. Breba is fairly big flavour is about average does resemble the flavour of main crop but much more watered down not as sweet as main crop. For those of you who do have this Bronze Paradiso you should not leave too many Breba's on the plant as they are not as tasty as Main crop.

Sorry Nelson,I had this experience before,and yes there is no way ,we here in North east and north will have Summer to ripe 2 crops.
So ,yes choosing one crop and eliminating the other one,is the trick.
Of course eliminating Breba in most cases,is the right move.

Vasile you are absolutely right, Not sure what I was thinking but I surely learned my lesson. This Breba is certainly inferior in taste compared to main crop so I should of just left 1 or 2 to sample and would of had some main crop in time. Oh well live and learn.

I have 2 more ripening now that are a bit bigger. No difference in taste compared to Ludgero's Unknown only my fathers tree does not drop any breba and his main crop are atleast a month ahead of mine. His is in a better location gets more direct sun. His breba were a bit more redish or coppery in colour. Still feel my father's unknown is the same exact fig as the Bronze Paradiso infact his is supperior, 2 years straight the breba is earlier and so is main crop. But taster wise no difference.

On your advice I picked up a Paradiso at the garden centre down the street from your Dad's and it ripened it's first fig today .
It was amazing . I bought a box of the Calimyrna figs and have to say it is on the same quality level as far as sweetness and flavor.
On a side note the fig trees you so generously gave me have all been potted up and are doing well ..

Do breba figs and main crop figs take the same amount of time to ripen?  Does thinning a crop shorten ripening time for the two remaining crops?  I can see how it results in better quality fruit with more energy going to remaining figs but do will they ripen sooner?

Hi John, glad you got a ripe fig I had to pick mine a few days early due to the squirls trying to steal it but I do have a few more of them starting to ripen now on both plants. I planted one of those Paradiso's from Joe's Garden inground so we will see how it does.

tmc well I would say Breba & Main do generally take around the same time to ripen. So if you leave both crops on your delaying when your main crop will ripen. For example if you pull off all your breba your main crop should generally form earlier and there for get ripe fruits earlier.

Well well well, this is a surprise after a couple days of sun & Rain the Bronze Paradiso Breba's certainly improved in taste. Went from average to very good. Pulp Colour is a rosey orange.

Man, a three bite half fig.  That's impressive for size. 

Yes this one was a nice sized breba. But last year I had a 5 bite half Black Yugoslavian Main Crop fig. It was like eating an apple.

And at almost 6'-1" and 265 I am partial to big things.  Plan is to find figs suitable in-ground for this Nashville climate, then grow a couple of fussier yet good tasting ones, then grow a couple just for size.  A friend of mine has (had) a sod farm and we have had this idea to grow some giant pumpkins - the really big ones that you carry around with a forklift.  But did not have his irrigation anywhere we could grow the pumpkins until this year.  Bought some seed, and started them on their way, when all the partners decided they could make more money making the farm into a natural area.  It's going to cost them some money up front, but they stand to do well with the "new" project.  The pumpkins got bladed up by a D9 doing the new grading plan.  Next year we are going to try at his marina.  Plenty of water available there - unfortunately lots of rock also.
